General

The idea of a municipal airport was established in 1936, thus the beginning of the Fort Smith Municipal Airport. An Airport Advisory Committee was appointed and the Fort Smith Board of Directors purchased 320 acres with bond money. The first scheduled flights were flown in 1952 by Braniff Airways. In 1954, the 188th Tactical Fighter Group of the Arkansas Air National Guard moved to the airport. Dubbed "Rick's Rippers" in honor of Major General Earl T. Ricks, former Adjutant General and highly decorated World War II Army Air Force pilot from Arkansas, they started flying with the RB-26, followed by the RF-80, RF-84F and RF-101. In 1972 they received the F-100 Super Sabre and became the 188th Tactical Fighter Group. In 1976, the group became known as the Flying Razorbacks and was assigned the F-4C Phantom II in April 1979. On July 1, 1988, the 188th took delivery of the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Following BRAC realigments, it transitioned to the A-10A in 2008. The airport also supports training activity from other military units most notably the 314th Airlift Wing located at Little Rock Air Force Base, AR. In the mean time, in 2002, the new civil terminal was built and opened. This airline terminal offers complimentary Wi-Fi and the restrooms were voted the America’s Best Public Restroom in 2005. The Fort Smith Air Museum is located within the airline terminal, although their J-3 is located in the Great Mall. Scheduled flights are performed by American Airlines. The A-10Cs are now replaced by UAVs. In 2024 the 85th Fighter Group and the 57th Fighter squadron was reactivated at Ebbing ANGB to provide training from 2025 on 24 F-35As for the Air Forces of Poland, Finland and Germany. The 425th Fighter Squadron has been relocated from Luke AFB with F-16Cs of the Singapore Air Force and will be augmented with the F-35Bs from 2026.

Layout

The airport has two runways, one in west-easterly direction, and one in south-northerly direction. The civil terminal is in the northeastern corner. The military aprons and the FBOs are located in the northwestern corner, the right side is the military side, the left side is the FBO and private side although all military transitioning traffic will park here as well. The tower is located on the south side.

Getting There

Fort Smith RAP lies in the southeast corner of the city of Fort Smith. The highway 540 runs through the city and along the airport. Just take the exit to the right and, via the Phoenix Avenue, towards the civil terminal.

Around the Airport

1Civil Terminal

Following the signs towards Fort Smith RAP, you arrive at the civil terminal. Several parkings are positioned around the terminal as is a large covered fence. The easterly parking should give a plain sight onto the apron in front of the terminal, for the westerly parking you will need a ladder.

2Mid runway near Tower

This is one amazing spot. The road towards the tower will give you a good sight on the mid part of the runway, on the south side. Take Highway 540 and exit to the right onto I-295. You will need to take a left onto S 66th Street, the road is left when you see yellow Caterpillars parked. Just drive it to the end and find a good spot. Do bring a ladder.

3Spottershill

The airport has even some kind of official place for aircraft enthousiasts, although for the photographers only good in the afternoon. Exit the highway 540 towards the airport but take a right at the second crossing along Phoenix Street. Now take a right at the first crossing onto S 46th Street. at the bend, to your left, you will find some kind of parking with a good view onto the ruwnay and the holding for the runway. This spot is used to check the A-10s before and after their flight. Do bring a ladder.

4FBO

The FBO handles all non-commercial flight, civil and military. Exit the highway 540 towards the airport and drive straight towards the large parking of the FBO. Walk around to find the best spot for your pictures although these will be best in the early morning or late evening.
