General

The most important role of Patrick AFB is supporting the launching activities at Cape Canaveral. The two rescue squadrons with their HH-60s and HC-130s are present to perform SAR-duties during Space Shuttle launches. Beside the SAR-duties for the NASA, they help the US Coastguard to expand their capabilities whenever they are needed. Beside the Air Force, also the Department of State (DOS) Air Wing houses here with several types of aircraft. Keep in mind that the flying activities at this airbase are limited.

Layout

Of the two runways, the 2/20 is the most frequent used one. At the large appron at the north of the air base, you can find the HH-60's and C-130's. Surrounding this appron, especially in the north, a lot of buildings and hangars are situated. The most southern appron, with the hangars is where the Department of State AW is located. Access gates can be found along the Pineda Causeway and the S Highway A1A.

Getting There

The airbase is easily reachable from the I-95. Driving the I-95 in northern or southern direction you should take exit 'N Wickham Rd/ 509' and follow this road in eastern direction. Turn left on Suntree Blvd and follow this road till the T-intersection at the end. Turn right onto highway 1 and follow the directions on the map above. The air base is also sign posted at the I-95.

Around the Airport

1Runway 2/20

This beach spot is reachable by foot if you park your car at one of the parking lots along the beach. Landing aircraft at runway 20 are most easily to see over here. The departing aircraft from runway 2 could be too high at this point. Since even the beach is part of the military installation, you can get some undesired attention when you bring your camera or scope.

2Runway 11/29

From the this spot, you can observe activities at runway 11/29. Because this runway isn't that long as runway 02/20, the departing aircraft from runway 11 most likely will not be that high. This runway is not used very often. Equal to spot 1 you can get here by foot from one of the parking lots. The same at spot 1, this spot is also part of the military installation.

Shot from the parking lot between spots 1 and 2 is this local Rescue Hercules. Wim Sonneveld.
