General

Located adjacent to the city of Warner Robins, Ga., Robins AFB is located in the geographic center of the largest state east of the Mississippi River. Atlanta, the state capital, is approximately 100 miles to the north on Interstate 75. Macon, Georgia's fourth largest city is 15 miles north. Interstate 16 intersects with I-75 in Macon and leads to Savannah, the Atlantic Ocean and the Golden Isles. A wide variety of organizations make up this huge airfield and industrial complex. The largest is the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, one of three major air logistics centers in the Air Force Materiel Command, headquarters at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. This summer, HMLA-773 moved in from NAS Atlanta/Dobbins JARB. The base covers more than 6,935 acres, including Georgia's largest runway. The runway is 12,000 feet long by 300 feet wide with two 1,000 foot overruns. Robins AFB is also home to the Museum of Aviation.

Layout

The large air force base is east of the Route 247 and stretches from the entrance to Warner Robins to the museum when leaving this city. The runway is located in the northerly part. On the cityside of the runway, many cargo and preserved aircraft can be seen. On the forestside is where the E-8 and tankers are based.

Getting There

Robins AFB is located on the eastside of the Highway 41/Route 247. From Atlanta, take Interstate 75 towards and through Macon. There, take the Highway 41 towards Warner Robins via Sofkee and Elberta. Do not forget the preserved F-86L at Middle Georgia Airport, along the Industrial Park Drive.

Around the Airport

1Runway 15, morning view

On Route 247, while leaving the small city of Elberta, at the entrance to Warner Robins, is crosses the N Davis Drive. Take a left here towards the airport. Just before the fence, take a left to drive along the fence to the other side. After crossing the runway lights, there is a small road up towards a small lake. From here, landing aircraft could be seen. Furthermore, you could follow this road along the fence towards a water cleaning facility and its surrounding forest. Here, you could see the apron on the east side.

2Runway 15, afternoon view

If you do not take a left as described above, but drive towards the fence, you will have a view onto the runway and the aprons on east and west side.

3View onto stored aircraft

Driving southbound on the Route 247, you will have a view onto the western aprons, although a bit obscured by trees and buildings. From the second gate, you will have a view onto the apron where stored aircraft are located.

4Gate Guard

Driving southbound on the route 247, try to have a look onto the aprons, eg after passing Green Street you should be able to look between some hangars onto the apron. At the main gate, near Watson Bloulevard, there is a F-15 preserved as gate guard. When you drive into this road, after 900 meters, there is a preserved T-33 at your right.

5Museum of Aviation

Driving southbound on the Route 247, eventually you will pass the Museum of Flight, which can not be missed.
