General

Emerging from the cotton fields of northwestern Louisiana in the early 1930s, Barksdale Air Force Base has grown into a major source of revenue and employment for the region. Barksdale AFB has proudly served the Ark-La-Tex (Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas) for more than 68 years. As a key Air Force Global Strike Command base, Barksdale has a pivotal role in providing a large part of the nation's deterrent force. Barksdale is home to the Air Force's newest command, Air Force Global Strike Command. The "Mighty Eighth" Air Force, of World War II fame, is headquartered at the base. Barksdale is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing operating the B-52H bombers.
It houses also the Eighth Air Force Museum, which maintains the historical aircraft and artifacts that grace the base. In 1978 the Eighth Air Force Museum was established with the arrival of a B-17 Flying Fortress of the type the "Mighty Eighth" flew during World War II. The museum has grown greatly over the years, and today its collection includes the B-24, B-29, B-47, B-52D, B-52G, British Vulcan, FB-111A, C-45, C-47, VC-64, KC-97, KC-135, P-51D, F-84F, MiG-21F, T-33 and SR-71A. It is also ground to the Green Flag East exercise. (source: USAF)

Layout

The airport has a north-south orientated runway and a very large apron at the west side. At the northern side of the apron a couple of dispersals used to position B-52s. From north to south you will find the apron areas used by the Green Flag East, by visitors, by the B-52 squadrons. There are three entry points towards the base, near spot 2, 3 and 4.

Getting There

Barksdale AFB is located northeast of the twin cities Shreveport and Bossier City. It is south of highway 20 and to arrive at the various spots you have to use exit 22 or exit 23.

Around the Airport

1Landing to the North

Aircraft landing with northerly winds can be seen from this spot. To arrive at this spot you need to vacate highway 20 via exit 22 onto Airline Drive/Route 3105. At the next large crossing take a left onto Barksdale Avenue/Route 71. After passing the Barksdale AFB main gate, when approaching the McDonald's, take a left onto Shady Grove Drive. Follow it until it makes a left bend, then take a right onto Normand Avenue. Park your car, cross the fence and continue by foot, you will leave the urban area and are on private property. Walk until you see the base fencing and position yourself here.

2Mike Woods Park

Aircraft landing with northerly winds can be seen from this spot, but also the aircraft for Green Flag in their sun shelters. Follow it up until the end. At this T junction, take a right onto Dennis Street. At the end, in Mike Woods Park, you can park your car and walk up to the edge to have a view of landing traffic.

3Global Power Museum

The entrance to the museum can be found at spot 3. Exit the highway 20 via exit 22 onto Airline Drive/route 3105. At the first junction, take a left onto Industrial Drive and take a right onto Northgate Road. At the gate show your ID to gain entrance to the museum, which is open during the week only. From the museum grounds and from the area in front of the museum and gate, some B-52s can be seen. News is that only US Citizens are allowed in nowadays, so it is best to arrange your visit with the museum beforehand.

4Landing to the south

When aircraft are landing to the south, this is the spot. Take exit 23 from highway 20 and leave onto Industrial Drive. Position yourself after you have passed Southern RV and crossed the railway. Driving along this road will give you some views onto the aircraft on the apron. Position yourself for best pictures as the powerlines can be annoying.

While standing at spot 4, Johan van der Velden took this shot of a visiting RC-135.
