General

US Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City is one of the busiest air stations. Their field of activity stretches as far as Greenland, the Azores and the Caribbean for conducting Search-and-Rescue (SAR), law enforcement, international ice patrol, aids to navigation support, environmental protection and homeland security. The air station is just a part of the much larger Support Center Elizabeth City. Besides this operational flying command, there are several other commands present here. You can also find here the Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC), the Aviation Logistics Center (aircraft maintenance and engineering) and Small Boat Station Elizabeth City.

Layout

A large part of the airfield is used by the US Coast Guard. You can find the original part on the north side of the field. Also the somewhat newer hangars in the east/southeast are used by them. Next to these large hangars, the civil apron is located, in the southeast corner. Gates to the air field can be found along Weeksville and Consolidated Rd.

Getting There

The Air Station is located along the road Elizabeth City-Weeksville, just a few miles south of Elizabeth City. You can get here by driving from Elizabeth City to Weeksville on the 344. This road is also mentioned on the map above. The Air Station is also sign posted in Elizabeth City.

Around the Airport

1Gateguards

The preserved aircraft located in this corner of the air field. They are quite close to the fence and easy to photograph.

2Runway 10

This spot is located at some sort of old crash gate. It looks like a small stop over lane along the road. From here, you have an excellent view upon taxiing and lining-up at runway 10 as well as the landing at that runway. One note of attention is that Weeksville Rd can be very busy, so keep an eye on the cars.

3Landing runway 1

At this small gas station, you will be able to catch aircraft landing at runway 1. Take-offs from runway 19 are too high at this spot. Since you are on property ground of the gas station owner, it could be wise to ask permission for your stay there.

4Civil apron

At this small parking lot you look immediately onto the civil platform, with some small aircraft. From here, you can also see aircraft in front of the large hangars that are on you right but also some taxi traffic from and to runway 1/19.

5Inside the hangars

While driving on Consolidated Rd you might be lucky if the rear doors of the large hangars are open. If so, you could be able to get some serials of the US Coast Guard aircraft inside.

6USCG apron

From here, you will be able to see the complete US Coast Guard apron. This spot is perfect for the number crunchers, because you can read the entire platform from here. For photography, this spot is not very suitable since you are in plain sight of the gate at the end of Consolidated Rd. This will surely result in some undesired attention.
