General

Springfield-Beckley is an airport with a civil and a military part. The civil aircraft are mainly the one- or two-propeller driven aircraft and some small jet aircraft. The military part is home of the Ohio Air National Guard. In 2005, the BRAC determined that the Ohio ANG should leave Springfield-Beckley MAP. After re-evaluation they determined that the 178FW shall stay over here. In 2006 the Dutch Government signed an agreement with the USAF concerning a relocation of the RNLAF-F-16 training squadron from Volkel AB to Springfield-Beckley. In total 14 RNLAF F-16s (9 F-16AMs and 5 F-16BMs) conducted their training flights from this airfield. The first F-16s arrived in April 2007, but in 2010 this contract ended and all Dutch F-16's moved to Tucson, AZ. That 178FW will also loose their F-16s and will be transfered to operate with MQ-1 Predators. The Predators will only be controlled from here but not physically present at the airfield.

Around the Airport

1Landing runway 24

The spot is perfect for observing and photographing aircraft landing on runway 24. Especially in the afternoon, the light is optimal because the sun is behind you. Aircraft taking off from runway 06 could be too high to be photographed.

2Runway 06/24

At the end of W Blee Rd you have a side view at runway 06/24. If aircraft are on the runway itself, the fence could be a problem while photographing these aircraft. For the number cruncher this spot is perfect to read off the serials of the aircraft present at the ANG ramp located behind the runway.

3Landing runway 33

From this spot you will have a clear view upon aircraft landing at runway 33. If you want to photograph the aircraft landing at runway 33, you will have to find a spot along W Jackson Rd where the position of the sun is optimal. This runway is mainly used by the smaller aircraft.

4Landing runway 06

In the afternoon you will have the sun in your back while looking at the aircraft landing at runway 06. Departing aircraft from runway 24 tend to be too high overhere.

5Platform

From this spot you can read off most of the aircraft present on the platform(s). Going further west or east enalbes you to see the aircraft which are hidden behind hangars and buildings.
