General

Shaw Air Force Base is home of the 20th FW, the headquaters of the 9th AF and the headquaters of United States Air Forces Central (USAFCENT). The 20th FW is part of Air Combat Command (ACC) and is the largest wing that is flying with the F-16. Their goal is to provide and keep a combat-ready air force. Beside this, Shaw is also the home of Viper East F-16 demo team and is one of the two F-16 aerial demonstration teams in Air Combat Command.

Layout

Shaw AFB is an airfield with two parallel runways. The 04L/22R is the main one. At the north part of the platform is a large area of sunsheds. Here many of the F-16s are parked. The maingate of the base is located on the south west of the air base. Here are also five gate guards present. These can be seen from the 378 (Broad St). Driving up to these gateguard will be difficult since you cannot make a u-turn before ending up at the gate itself. On a lot of maps the State Hwy 364 (Frierson Rd), just north of the airfield, is still a through street, but is now partial base property.

Getting There

Shaw AFB is located about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of downtown Sumter, South Carolina, just between two the communities Oakland and Cherryvale. Coming from the I-95, you can take the exit Sumter/Shaw AFB, which brings you at the 378 or 521 (Sumter Hwy). This is depending on which direction you are coming from. Follow the signs towards Sumter (in western direction), but most likely the air base will be sign posted as well. If you are coming from the I-20, you have to take the exit Sumter/Shaw AFB as well. This will bring you also on the 521 (Sumter Hwy). Sumter and Shaw AFB is located south of you. Just follow the signs.

Around the Airport

1Landing runway 4 (1)

At this spot you will have a good view upon the aircraft landing at both runways 4, but you can see some taxi traffic on the air field. Although you are somewhat further from the runway in comparison to spot 2, this spot is located at a more accepted location than spot 2. It is located adjacent to the gas station. For photography, you will need at least 300mm for aircraft landing at runway 4R. If you are lucky, departing aircraft from runway 22L or R are not too high over here.

2Landing runway 4 (2)

This spot is almost equal to spot 1, but here you are closer to the aircraft landing at runway 4. A problem with this spot could be is that it is directly in front of a local bar. This can give you some undesired attention with our unfamiliar hobby. From this spot you will also have a good view upon some taxi traffic at the air field. When you are here and you focus to the left side of the air field you will be able to see the gate guards along the access road.

3Landing runway 22

At this spot you will have a good view upon aircraft landing at both runways (22L and R). If you will keep your distance to the air field, you won't attract a lot of attention.
