General

Oscar Machado Zuloaga airport, also referred to as Aeropuerto Caracas, is a general aviation airfield north east of Charallave, about 25 km south east of Caracas in Miranda state. It also holds an army maintenance unit.

Layout

The airfield is perched on a hillside and private property. So to get anywhere near the action, you will have to pass the first gate or else no viewing! The east-west runway is bordered on the north side by large ramps filled with rows of hangar-sheds. The military are located in the north east part of the main ramp where it bends north. The south side holds a small ramp and the tower, but that side is not visible from the north.

Getting There

Take highway 1, known as 'Troncal 1' or 'Autopista Regional de Centro', south from Caracas. Use the Charallave/Cua/Santa Teresa exit. After 6 km, take the exit signposted as Aeropuerto Caracas.

Around the Airport

1Terminal

After you talked yourself onto the airfield, proceed ahead. At the end of the straight end, there is a parking at the private terminal. From there you can see anything parked in front of this terminal, some of the nearest rows of sheds and the taxiway. The latter from the north, so with back light obviously; you are still well on the northern hemisphere ;-).

2North side ramp view

Exit the terminal parking and follow the airfield road clockwise. After the main area with hangars and gate, the road bends left. From there you can view the north east ramp from the west and also the storage area on the near edge of it. No clue if you will be allowed or able to proceed this far though.

3East side view

You can follow the road all around the hangars, it bends right and right again and ends between the easternmost hangars. There is a parking and from here you can see the south east ramp but alas, not the runway.

4On the airfield itself

To gain access to the main ramp, go back until you reach the north gate. You will have to be accompanied by a local or gain permission to enter the ramp. If so, make a left in the first taxiway and you will be in the area where the army is based.
