October 1969 102 Regiment was established at Shahe airport. In November 1969 it relocated to Nan Yuan after 13 School (former 1st Vocational College util October 1968) had vacated the air base. The unit operated some special missions aircraft in addition to regular passenger aircraft flying for China United Airlines until 2005 when CUA became a civilian operated airline. With the introduction of CRJ700 in 2014 passenger flights are possible again.
October 2019 Nan Yuan was officially closed and most of the 102nd Regiment moved to the new airport Nanjiao close to Daxing.

In 2021 the first J-10s were noted. It is believed that the J-7E, JJ-7A and JL-9 within 171st Brigade were wfu (long) before 2021.
In 2012 FTTC/3rd Reg (serials 61x8x) was converted into 172nd Brigade.
In 2017 the JL-10 was added to the Brigade.
In 2017/2018 J-16s were introduced within 172nd Brigade, followed by J-20s in February 2018. Aircraft of the 177th Brigade were first noted in March 2016, although it is believed that the unit operated from 2014 acting as opposing (Blue) Air Force. 4th Div was disbanded as a fighter division in 2003, with 10th Regiment going to 30th Division as 89th.
4th Div was re-established as a transport division at Qionglai in 2004.
In 2012 Y-9 aircraft started to replace the Y-7/An-26s within the 10th Regiment.
By 2019 the Y-9 started replacing the few Y-7s within the 11th Regiment. When the 12th Regiment at Dalian converted to transport duties fighter operations went to 90th Regiment.
While reconstruction of Qionglai took place 2009-2012, aircraft were rebased to Chengdu-Taipingsi and Leizhuang.
6 July 2016 the 12th Regiment became the first operational user of the Y-20A transport plane, starting a gradual replacement of the Y-8Cs. The Y-5, Y-7 and Mi-171s were then moved to the new 5th Transport and SAR regiment.
Around 2017 the small transport aircraft flying with 12th Regiment (serial range 11x5x) were transferred to the new 5th Transportation and SAR Brigade with new serials.
Early 2023 Z-20s were noted with the Brigade, however at a yet unknown base.

Dingxin Air Base is the major test facility for the development of advanced tactics and techniques required for effective modern offensive and defensive air combat.
Yearly full Regiments come here on detachment for combat training.
At Dingxin many J-6s were converted to drone.
In 2016 the unit started operations with J-10C, J-16 and J-20 aircraft almost simultaneously. Using the experience an improved version ("J-20A", also known as "J-20(II)" or "J-20 status II") became production standard.

The Guangzhou Military Region Training Base/1st, 2nd and 3rd Reg were formed on 11 June 1988 from 27th Div/79th, 80th and 81st Reg flying J-6 aircraft.
July 1998 the Training Base was downgraded to one Regiment (3rd) that transferred to Wudangshan (serials 61x6x).
In 2003 the Regiment (then flying with J-7IIs) got subordinated to 18th Div. as 53rd Reg using 31x9x serials initially and later 21x9x.
The first 53rd Regiment was formed in January 1954, but ceased to exist in August 1986 when it was transferred into 42nd Div/125th Regiment.
Due to the serial allocation this Regiment had been identified as 54th Regiment for a long time.
March 2017 the Regiment got subordinated to Central TC (from Southern TC).
Early 2020 the J-7IIs were withdrawn from use and were replaced by J-7Es that lasted only until 2022 when also these aircraft were no longer used.
Upgrades on the airbase indicated that new aircraft can be expected soon though.
