Austrian Airlines to renew long-haul fleet with B787
On 19 April 2023, Austrian Airlines announced it will renew its long-haul fleet with the Boeing Dreamliner. Last January, we already reported that the Lufthansa Group was mulling about allocating B787s to Austrian after placing orders for additional aircraft. That happened early March 2023, so the news from Austrian doesn't come as a surprise.
In total, the airline will receive ten B787-9s. The first one is set to be delivered early 2024 and the remaining nine will arrive between 2024 and 2028. According to the press-release, the aircraft will be coming from Lufthansa and the orders the Lufthansa Group has with Boeing. The European Airline Fleets website is stating that the current five B787-9s in Lufthansa's fleet will make the move to Austrian.
The number of ten Dreamliners also means Austrian Airlines is growing its long-haul fleet with one aircraft, as it currently exists of three B767-300ERs and six B777-200ERs.
The Lufthansa Group has taken delivery, so far, of five B787-9s, all operated by Lufthansa. It has 34 Dreamliners remaining on order.
