Log South Korea

Post by Ronaldsnl »

Dear all,

Last week we visited Korea for the Seoul Airshow at Cheongju from 25-27 of October. Of course we also visited some bases in the neighbourhood. At first we went to Suwon but we were not sure the RF-4C was still flying.

Suwon 22-10-2013
We arrived here at 4PM, on the way we saw 2 F16’s making an overshoot. This enhanced our worries that the RF-4C was already replaced by the F16. Seeing 2 RF-4C’s as a decoy was also not good for our moods….. Further nothing was flying.

Suwon 23-10-2013
At first we only saw F-5’s making several T&G’s. Around 11am we saw 2 F4’s flying but very far away. Nothing happened further. But at 1130 2 RF-4C’s made an overshoot, went in a break, releasing the very well known hoooowling sound of an unmodified J79engine clearly announcing to the whole Suwon area: The RF-4C is still alive and kicking in Korea!!! In the afternoon 4 more flew. Pictures are in the photoforum.

Cheongju 24-10-2013
Due to runway maintenance at Seongnam, this year the Seoul Airshow moved to Cheongju AB, 100 km south of Seoul.
We were hoping to see some aircraft arriving here for the airshow but almost all aircraft were already on the platform. But the F-4’s were still flying ! This was noted between 10 and 12 am.

In the afternoon we visited the airbase to see the rehearsal of the Seoul airshow. A log will follow

Seongmu 25-10-2013
The Seoul airshow only started at 1:30 pm so in the morning we visited the Air Force Academy at Seongmu, around 8 km south of Cheongju. First we visited the excellent museum but when we saw 5 An-2’s going in take-off and doing some circuits we ran back to the car and drove to the approach side just on time for 1 t&g of an AN-2. We didn’t see them returning till we left at 11am.

Anyone about the unit of the AN-2’s ? Are they based at Seongmu?

Cheers
Ronald

Hi Ronald

I noticed from your F-4E notes above you have 6-497 listed. Just to confirm, this would be 60-497.

haha...dutchphantom knows me too well, yes I was there.

By the way, the F-16, F-5's and some of the KT-1's you saw at Cheongju were not strictly visitors as they are aircraft on attachment to the 29th TES which operates out of the base.

The An-2's are based at Seongmu but no-one knows any data about them as officially they don't exist!
