A light aircraft had made an emergency landing after engine trouble at Martins Bay beach in Mahurangi, near Warkworth, this afternoon (Friday 10/01/2014).
When attempting to take off from the beach again, the aircraft struck the surf which resulted in a crash and damage to the aircraft.
The pilot and co-pilot appeared to have walked away from the accident although the aircraft sustained damage to its propeller, wing and possibly its fuselage.
The aircraft involved in this accident was a new Jabiru J200 microlight (it was on its first flight) and the registration is ZK-ORN.
The aircraft will be trucked from the beach and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will investigate the incident.
