Surinam Airways (PY, Paramaribo Int'l) will acquire a B767 in 2015 to compliment its only widebody aircraft, an A340-300, used to service its Paramaribo Int'l to Amsterdam flagship route.

According to Caribbean News Now, the airline intends to use the B767 to help offset exorbitant charter and lease fees incurred every-time the A340 suffers technical problems or has to undergo maintenance.

ETOPS Approval shall be no problem since SLM has much experience with long range flights.

A new type of aircraft will have its own issues. In my opinion a second A340 would make sense. Look at training, interchangeable etc etc. This all saves money etc. But I am more curious what the plans for the future will be for Surinam. Their current A340 is already 20 years old and will not continue flying forever. A second A340 could be a short term solution. But maybe that applies for the 767 as well. I was expecting an A330 or maybe a 777. But are they available on the secondhand market?

767 is still in production so airframes with few hrs are for sure available. When 787 deliveries will proceed further there will be more and more low time 767 available Imo.

They dont fly those long range flights on ETOPS aircraft. or do I miss something?

The "Smart" of Chris was "Cynisch". Lets wait and see, this year at least 2 24 year old 763 will go on the market....

I thought the A340 would leave the fleet anyway in 2015. It would not surprise me if in the end they will go for two 330's and not the 767.

Nobody said that.

When requesting ETOPS they look at the organization of the airline in question. If they have showable experience in long haul flights the process of obtaining ETOPS certification will be much quicker/easier.

I think you agree that SLM has considerable experience in long haul operations.

Low hour airframes are available new build, but Surinam is not gonna get a new build. Second hand however, are the older ones. A330/A340 would be a smarter option in that case. Plenty of stored A340 to chose from these days, as well as older A330s (I say Emirates).
