CENTURION CARGO: Financial troubles

The future of Centurion Air Cargo, the Miami-based Latin American specialist, appears to be in doubt following a series of lawsuits filed against it by fuel supplier Chemoil Corp. While flights are continuing to operate, Chemoil claims that it is owed $12.9m, and has issued 11 lawsuits – one each for nine MD-11Fs and two for 747-400Fs, operated by Centurion and its partner SkyLease.

Centurion has faced increased competition in the last year, with players such as Atlas Air eating into the Latin American market. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in the year-to-date, Centurion has seen cargo revenue ton miles fall by 30% over 2013. Centurion’s Schiphol office, where it has its European hub, told The Loadstar that it had no comment. But one source familiar with the carrier said he wouldn’t underestimate Alfonso Rey, Centurion’s owner, who earlier this year sold his Miami Beach island house for $29m.

In March, Centurion’s president Ian Morgan quit, to take up a position at Qatar Airways Cargo.

Centurion Cargo staakt tijdelijk vrachtvluchten Schiphol

De Amerikaanse vrachtmaatschappij Centurion Cargo heeft deze week zijn lijndienst tussen Miami en Schiphol 'tijdelijk stopgezet'.

Volgens Europa manager Paul Berntsen zijn de twee reguliere vrachtvluchten ‘opgeschort’, maar wil het bedrijf ‘op termijn en waarschijnlijk al dit jaar’ met de lijndienst terugkeren op Schiphol.
Berntsen zegt verder dat Centurion Cargo en zusterbedrijf Sky Lease de komende tijd de Europese markt via Schiphol zullen blijven bedienen met chartervluchten. Er zou zelfs sprake zijn van meer charters, voegt hij er aan toe. ‘De deur gaat zeker niet dicht voor Europa’, aldus de manager. 'We beschikken over vier B747-400F’s en daar komen er nog twee bij de komende tijd. Die zullen we deels op Europa gaan inzetten.’

Ook wijst hij er op dat het verkoopbureau van Centurion Cargo op Schiphol 'gewoon open blijft'. De vrachtmanager kan verder niet ingaan op de achtergronden van het besluit van Centurion om de lijndienst tijdelijk stop te zetten.

In de internationale vakpers wordt al enige tijd gespeculeerd over een mogelijk faillissement van de Amerikaanse vrachtmaatschappij, die in juni 2011 begon met vluchten op Nederland. Zo is Centurion Cargo in de VS verwikkeld in een aantal rechtszaken met schuldeisers, waaronder leasemaatschappijen, verzekeringsmaatschappijen en brandstofleveranciers.

Centurion Cargo zou daardoor al een deel van de vliegactiviteiten, waaronder de vluchten met vier MD11's, al enige tijd geleden hebben stopgezet.
