(PIC) Taiwan September 2015 [MIL] UPDATE

Post by Wolbie »

September 8th:

Hi all, visited Taiwan in September for the summer holidays, what a lovely country, well worth a visit!
After a stay in Taipei we travelled to the eastcoast to Hualien. On September 8th we enjoyed a wonderful motorcyle trip through the Taroko Gorge and on our way back to Hualien we passed the airfield. A familiar noise filled the skies, F-16 engines running!
Got back to the hotel for my camera gear and drove back to the airfield and settled myself in the old restaurant next to the Carrefour. From here you have a clear view on the treshold of RWY03.
Two Vipers returned to the airfield a little later, followed by an Orion and a Thunderhawk. A nice bonus as I only planned to visit Hualien airbase the next day!

September 9th (morning):

The next day I visited Hualien airfield again, again positioning myself in the old restaurant.
Action started early with four F-16's returning at about 08.20h. The main target for visiting Hualien showed up next, a RF-5E, followed by a F-5F.
After the F-5's departed police appeared on the staircase of the old restaurant, fun seemed to be over!
They asked me to leave, stating photography from this location was prohibited. Photographing aircraft was no problem however, so I opted for a position in the approach of RWY03 near the river/railwaybridge crossing.
The morning continued with the recovery of the F-5's, followed by a Bluehawk, Hawkeye, several F-16's and the single electronic warfare Hercules of the RoCAF. Nice catch!
A local photographer told me the E-2 and C-130HE flew from Hualien due to an exercise. Finally, on my way back to the city to get lunch, I caught 2 QRA F-16's returning to base.

September 9th (afternoon):

After getting directions from one of the local photographers I drove to Chiashan airbase in the afternoon. He told me that Chiashan was in use for the exercise and several Mirages were present.
Chiashan is Taiwan's main wartime airfield with underground hangars inside the aligning moutain. Should be big inside, sources vary from space for over 100 to 200 fighter planes!
From the outside there's not much to be seen, as with many military airfields in Taiwan, Chiashan is surrounded by high concrete walls. But you can see the tower and several air vents up on the mountain slope.
Chiashan is connected to Hualien airbase by a 2,5km long taxiway, which can probably be used as an emergency runway as well.
Action at Chiashan was slow with only 2 Mirages and 4 F-16's flying an afternoon mission, but the photography made up for it, full afterburner take off's with a nice mountain background!

Very Nice! I did not know they use the airbase near Hualien (every now and then).

You are very lucky with this C-130HE. In all my time in Taiwan I never had it in front of my lens.

Thank you all! I figured I was lucky with the C-130HE, even the local photographers were excited! :D

I'll continue with another airfield I visited during our stay in Taiwan, this one's a little more off the beaten track, Magong at the Penghu Islands!

September 15th:

In the second week of our trip through Taiwan we travelled to the Penghu Islands for some sun & fun. We ended up in Shanshui on the south side of the island in a nice hotel right across the beach. Turned out to be a perfect spot, both from the beach and roofterrace of the hotel you had a distant but good view on the approach of Magong airport. Magong houses a RoCAF detachement equipped with F-CK-1's.
First day was spent at the beach, in the afternoon I heard some fighters getting airborne, so grabbed my camera and walked to a uphill park on the east side of town. Found a nice shady place in a pagoda and was able to get some distant shots of two arriving F-CK-1's.

plus 1 unknown S-70C(M)-1 doing circuits over the old airport W of Shanshui.

September 16th, RCQC Magong:

Rented a scooter this day and drove off towards the airport. While driving alongside the airport terminal I noticed a helicopter approaching, turned out to be nice colourful SAR EC225.
Found a nice shady spot in a two story pagoda in a little village on the east side of the airport, were I waited for things to come.
Unfortunately no mil traffic was seen during the rest of the morning, first mil movement was a Fokker 50 departing at 12.30h.
One hour later the F-CK-1's came out to play, had to settle for some backlit take off shots by then.
Next thing to do was finding a good spot for landingshots, the threshold area was surrounded by high vegetation with no sight on the approach, so opted for a spot along the main road south of the airport. From here you had a clear view on the approach, nice bonus besides the F-CK-1's was a Beech 1900 arriving. After spending the whole day in the heat it was now time for a swim, back to Shanshui beach! A second Beech 1900 was seen here turning over Shanshui beach inbound Magong.

September 17th:

Turned out I picked the right day to visit Magong airfield the day before, no F-CK-1's were seen flying on the 17th.
Stayed at Shanshui beach and saw 2 C130's and one Beech 1900 inbound Magong in the afternoon.

September 18th:

We ended our stay on Penghu and flew back to mainland Taiwan on this day. Flying is cheap in Taiwan, flight from Magong to Taichung only costed 32 Euro's. You have a good view on the platform from the departure terminal, but signs are warning you that photography is not allowed.
So unfortunately the camera stayed in the bag while 2 F-CK-1's landed and taxied passed the terminal. When we approached Taichung it was announced that photography at Taichung was not allowed due to being a military airfield. Still managed to take a snapshot of a F-5E with my pocketcam while we landed.
