Not sure if this is something for here or for the preathuis section, but as it was on the radio / scanner while I was at Nellis last week, I thought I share....
Last Thursday we were at Nellis. Green Flag missions were on their way, when all of a sudden we heard a lot of flights checking in on arrival freq. Different fighters, heavies, bombers and tankers. All active callsigns and different voices. They were talking about recoving the package to Nellis and were all inbound runway 21. Voices became stronger and the controller was (of course) heard as well. Then they switched to tower, local channel4.
Then the frustration started. Nothing was heard on tower freq, and nothing came in. In total we heard over 30 a/c, and we really thought these were landing at one of the surrounding airports (North Las Vegas, McCarren or ????). We even did a scramble and went by those two fields..... Problem was, they never mentioned the base they would recover to.......
As during the afternoon, the same happened, and then they did mention they recovered to Nellis (and nothing showed up), we found out this was an exercise. Very strange, and never heard it this live on atc freq's before! We could laugh in the end, but when you think a lot of a/c are inbound and they don't show up.........
Just if you here this in future, you're warned about it
