Forum rules
ImageThis is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum.
Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post.
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.).

Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

(CIV) San Diego International Airport, January 1st 2017

Post by Basman »

We spent a family holiday in California the week around new years eve. In between family activities I managed to squeeze in some spotting time. After having celebrated new years eve with friends living near San Diego, I got up early on the first day of the new year (the benefit of suffering quite a lot from jet lags... ) and headed for San Diego International Airport. SDIA has only a single runway which is basically constantly occupied. There is a nice viewing area in the southeast corner, very close to the taxi- and runway. Unfortunately I didn't bring a ladder so I only took some shots of landing aircraft. The proximity of the airport to a hillside residential area gives a nice background in several pictures. Here are some examples of what was seen in those 2 hours.

EDIT: I used the BBC code on Flickr to embed the pictures here, but this seems to make them quite soft. Anybody a hint to prevent this? You can click them of course to get a sharper version on Flickr....

One of the first planes that arrived in the early morning sun was this Arizona special of Southwest. I hadn't even mounted my big zoom yet so I had to crop this picture.

Southwest is the most frequently seen airline here, with a mix of classics and newer versions of the 737. Luckily, their fleet is being repainted at the moment so you get some variety in your pictures as shown below.

There are hardly any intercontinental flights, instead there are a lot of feeders. Skywest is flying ERJ175's for both Alaska and United:

Of course, there are the regulars like American Airlines, Delta and United:

The northern neighbours are present as well:

And another Southwest just because they are so frequent here. A shorty this time.

One of the nices colour schemes here in my opinion is Frontier:

Between the other companies that can be found here are Spirit, jetBlue and Virgin America:

And to end this report a nice bizzer of the San Diego Chargers (maybe the owner arrived to announce the move of his team to nearby LA....can you immagine that this would happen in the Dutch football competition?!)

Best regards,
