The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has grounded the FA-50PH ‘Fighting Eagle’ Fighter/Surface Attack/Lead-in Fighter Trainer (F/SA/LIFT) aircraft after a friendly fire occured on July 12 in Marawi City that killed 2 soldiers. 11 Soldiers were wounded.
“The FA-50 will momentarily be pulled out from deployment until the investigation is finished and once we ascertain the reason why the bombs went off target,” AFP spokesperson Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said in a press briefing, as quoted GMA News Online.
“The AFP is suspending the use of that particular aircraft for any further airstrike until such time that the cause of the accident has been determined, or the failure of the equipment has been determined,” Brigadier General Padilla added.
On July 12, AFP public affairs office chief Colonel Edgard Arevalo said “an ordnance missed its target during an airstrike conducted at about 12 noon of 12 July 2017.”
The bomb was 250 meters off target. The impact of the explosion caused the collapse of nearby structures.
“Large debris from heavily reinforced buildings accidentally hit two of our personnel who [died] in the process,” Arevalo added.
