Disappeared helicopter Suriname after years found in jungle

A helicopter disappeared in the jungle near the Surinamese village of Atjoni. In the wreck are the remains of the crew.

The owner of helicopter company Hi-Jet, Jerrel of Embricqs,
says to the NOS that,
based on the photos taken of the wreck,
it is certain that it is the device that goes on the evening of 23 May 2015 disappeared without a trace.

Two days after the disappearance,
there were elections in Suriname, and the aircraft had delivered ballot boxes and staff in a remote area in the south of the country.
On board were the pilot of the aircraft Donavan van Embricqs (40) and technician Ryatno Kertodikromo (38). Van Embricqs had the Dutch nationality and was a cousin of the Hi-Jet owner.

The helicopter company searched for the missing device for weeks after the disappearance and finally even rewarded a reward for the golden tip.
Dutch friends and family organized a benefit evening in Amsterdam to contribute to the costs of the search.

The wreck was discovered Wednesday morning around 11 o'clock local time in the jungle by Surinamese employees
who are doing research in the area for a Chinese logging company.

"I was called and immediately drove to Atjoni," says Jerrel van Embricqs.
"The heli is located about 16 kilometers from Atjoni, in pristine rainforest,
it is more than four and a half hours walk
and I have not seen the wreck itself,
but on the basis of the pictures taken by the finders I'm sure that it is our missing device. "

Because of the bad weather and because the evening fell in consultation with the police decided Thursday morning at the crack of the day to walk to the wreck.

The forensic investigation will investigate the wreckage.

Jerrel from Embricqs thinks on the basis of the photos that the device has hit a tree in bad weather and has been caught in fire.
He thinks that the crew members were dead instantly.

'No hope anymore'

The owner of the heli is excited and looks with mixed feelings to the trip that he will make to the wreck today.
"I had no hope for a long time that Don and Ryatno would be found alive, but now that I was right, it's hard to face it."
Nevertheless, Van Embricqs is relieved that it is now possible to comply with the closure of the case.

Other family members of the two killed crew members have thanked the people on a special Facebook page who have supported them in recent years.
"The terrible news has reached us," they write. "Our loved ones have been found and unfortunately not in the way that we had hoped for. Yes, despite the elapsed time, there was still the silent hope of good news."
