...and yes, Yakutia sees the coldest city temperatures in the world...

With an average temperature of −8.8 °C (16.2 °F), Yakutsk is the second coldest major city in the world after Norilsk, but Yakutsk sees colder temperatures in the winter.[11]

On January 11, two Mi-171A2 helicopters manufactured at the Moscow Helicopter Plant arrived at the Yakutsk airport for flight tests in extremely cold temperatures.

They were delivered to Yakutia by an An-124-100 Ruslan aircraft from Volga-Dnepr Airlines.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Transport and Road Facilities of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

"Mi-171A2 - the most modern car type Mi-8, which is already in demand by foreign and Russian customers.

Having confirmed the possibility of guaranteed use of the helicopter at such low temperatures,
we hope to expand the range of potential operators who use this type of machinery and are considering the possibility of updating the fleet, "said the executive director of JSC" Moscow Helicopter Plant. M.L. Milya "Sergey Romanenko.

The team of the Moscow Helicopter Plant during its stay in Yakutsk should check the operation of the units and the anti-icing system of the Mi-171A2 helicopter.

The system must work in the conditions stipulated by the Type Certificate and confirm the calculated characteristics.

The main criterion for a specially developed test program is the air temperature not higher than -50 ° C.

In addition, all helicopter systems are tested,
which operate at a very high voltage at extremely low temperatures.

Thanks to the cold test at the Yakutsk airport,
aircraft designers are trying to expand the operating conditions,
which helps to avoid problems arising in low temperature conditions.

These include mechanical failures,
freezing of lubricants,
difficulties with engine start-up,
failures in the operation of on-board electronics.

Airport "Yakutsk", uninterruptedly functioning in extreme climatic conditions,
has long been used as a unique testing ground for new aircraft in the Arctic cold.

In different years of testing, the aircraft Il-96, Il-96 400T, Tu-214, Tu-334, Boeing 757, 777-300ER, Airbus A 319, A 310, A 340, Be-200 Amphibian Aircraft, An -148 and others.

In 2017, tests were carried out on a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and Ansat helicopter of the Kazan helicopter plant.
