Today, February 1st, 2018 will remain a historic day for the Belgian Mirage Pilots Association as after long negotiations they could welcome back home one of their former aircraft, Mirage 5BD BD09.
BD09, one of the trainers, entered service in 1971 and was flown into storage at Weelde in January 1994, during its career it had totaled 3846 flying hours and 3930 landings, with potentially still 1154 hrs left on the airframe. It remained there until it was sold to SAGEM and moved to France by road in 1999.
In 2013 BD09 was scheduled to be auctioned to the highest bidder during an aviation auction in Paris, France, but remained unsold. In 2015 it was noted in storage at Sofema, Arcachon (La Teste-de-Buch) in France and in 2017 the first rumors surfaced that the aircraft was acquired by a group of enthusiasts in Belgium. Early this year these rumors were confirmed with a scheduled arrival date at Limburg Regional Airport, formerly known as Brustem airbase (near Sint-Truiden) on February 1st.
The plan is to display the aircraft at Brustem for the foreseeable future during which it will be taken care off by a dedicated group of former Belgian Air Force personel, all part of the Mirage Pilots Association (MPA)..
