AXALP 2018 - questions

Post by Alpha Kilo One »

Hi all,

We are planning to visit AXALP 2018, booked a hotel in Brienz already.
Now I am reading all sorts of reports on internet.
Lot of questions arise. More than I expected, or wanted actually.

What is the best way (what's allowed, what's not) to travel from Brienz to AXALP?
Read things about buses, skilifts and so on.
Do we have to arrange that in advance? Maybe out of the Netherlands already?
What do we definately do have to take with us?
Apart from camera, food, drinks, all sort of clothing, good shoes and hiking sticks.....
Any more suggestions?

Maybe it sounds a bit funny, or even silly.
But for me it doesn't feel like a "normal" airshow....!

Bring a set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag (socks, shirt, trousers..), lightweight things as much as possible, a good harness on your backpack, something to sit on perhaps (light, foldable seat), sun protection (big hat, sun lotion) and ideally some preparation/training in walking on angled ground..
Rome has Bufalotta, Arizona has alotta BUFF..

I am interested in doing Axalp from the South Side. Is it better to hike from Grosse Scheidegg or First (or from the North)?
Thanks

Does anyone has coordinates for the South side positions (Wildgärst and Äbeflüe)? Is it 46.692870, 8.074342 and 46.696233, 8.051658?

If you wish to go via bus and chairlift (still a hike after) you need to purchase a ticket from Ticketinfo. From what I can make out it also includes parking in Brienz as well.

More details on the Swiss Air Force website:

Another question: if you are not so much interested in making the best pictures but more in watching aircraft departing/arriving at their bases:
Is it correct that most, if not all, participant operate out of Meiringen?

Does anybody happen to know more precisely which aircraft are participating and operating from which bases?
From what I heard, at least the six to eight grey F-5s operate from Payerne?
At least a few F-18s reported to operate from Meiringen, as well as the helicopters??

Hornets are operating from Meiringen 6 to 8 jets in the Morning and Afternoon. Also 8 cougars/puma’s and 4 EC635’s are operating out of Meiringen.

Tigers return to their own bases, so no landing at Meiringen for them.

By the way..... Today was one large waiting line onthe way back. First for the stairs in the way down. Second at the ski lift. Third the waiting line for the bus. That was the worst one. Not so funny to my opinion. In the morning there was no shooting at all. Bit disappointing.
