A US Marine Corps F-35B crashed Friday in Beaufort County, South Carolina,
near Marine Corp Air Station Beaufort, a US military official told CNN.

The pilot is believed to have ejected but his status is unknown, the official said.
...according to the laws of attrition it had to happen some day... :|

UPDATE 10:47am PDT:
The aircraft belonged to the resident F-35B training squadron VMFAT-501
and the pilot did safely eject
and is being treated for any injuries.

The crash happened around five miles from the airfield.

This is the first total loss crash event—and possibly the first ejection—
involving an F-35 in the program's history,
which includes nearly 12 years of flying.
Well, it IS the first serious ejection out of an F-35 Lightning...

I am afraid this will have a major impact on the HMS Queen Elizabeth F-35B Flight trails which were due to start in the next few days..

Edit: just read on Twitter that the first F-35B touched down on HMS Queen Elizabeth already a few days ego.

Edit 2: at the moment no grounding orders so thankfully the flight trials continue as advertised.
