Provincial States of Groningen are for stopping investments
at Groningen Airport Eelde
if there are no alternatives to the Nordic flights.

A majority in the States thinks that the provincial government
rightly puts its place in place with 'Eelde'.

With the departure of the Estonian airport, significant connections between Eelde and European airports such as Copenhagen and Munich will disappear in January.

This means that the strategy of the airport that 'Eelde' can only survive with direct routes to major airports is under heavy pressure.

Knife on the throat

The Groningen deputy Patrick Brouns (CDA) put the knife on the throat in a States meeting.

"We have asked them how they will fulfill the strategy and ambitions that we,
as shareholders, have put on the table of 46 million euros, now that Nordica is leaving.

This includes a balanced budget for 2019. ''
The management of 'Eelde' has indicated that it is in talks with two airlines
about setting up an important regular service.

At the moment there is a kind of draft budget on the table with an annual deficit of 775,000 euros.

Amazing

VVD States member Nico Bakker finds that surprising.

"There really needs to be a budget now.

We do find a regional airport important.

As far as we are concerned, the shareholders should not be tempted to close the tent.

"Brouns states that closure is certainly not the case at the moment.

"The investments on 'Eelde' go 'on hold',
but we have to put money into things at the airport that are needed to fly safely there. ''

According to Brouns, the VVD is right.
"There should already have been a budget, but we have released a release earlier.
In this case it is important to get more clarity in the operational costs of the airport. ''
