航空自衛隊の偵察航空隊が２０１９年度末に廃止され、４０年以上にわたって日本周辺を空から監視してきた偵察機「ＲＦ４」が退役する。Ｆ４戦闘機をベースにし、“音速の忍者”とも呼ばれた部隊は、乗員が上空から撮影したフィルム写真を地上で現像するアナログなスタイルを貫いてきたが、最新鋭偵察機のデジタル化・無人化の波に押された格好だ。空自幹部は「戦い方がよりスピード重視になり、時代の流れだ」とする。
茨城・百里基地の滑走路。訓練を終えて帰還したＲＦ４の機体下部から、同隊の隊員がフィルムを取り出し、基地内の暗室に駆け込んだ。待ち構えていた別の隊員が現像機を動かし、出てきたフィルムをミリ単位で動かしながらつなぎ合わせる。地上の様子を写した１枚の大判写真が仕上がると、隊員らがルーペをのぞき込み、１ミリ四方の目標物を次々見つけていった。
