the possibility of seeing them in the skies in the near future is great,
since it would be logical to spend money to regain airworthiness only to transport it and abandon it at another airport.
The rumors in the Russian aeronautical medium indicate
that the Russian Air Force could have acquired the aircraft to modernize them and
include them in their fleet of Air Replenishment (REVO) or Early Warning and Airborne Control (AWACS),
reducing the waiting time by the assembly of new units.
Also, they could be used as test platforms in flight and
on land by its manufacturer Iluyshin,
which still maintains active production to meet the country's military demands.

An aircraft so scarce there are currently only three flying with a civilian airline,
the remaining twelve or so performing government and Air Force operations.
Ilyushin IL-96-300 (RA-96006) of former airline Domodedovo Airlines
took to the air last Wednesday (12th Nov) after a decade in storage.............
The aircraft first delivered 1992 to Aeroflot was transferred to Domodedovo Airlines –
Moscow in 1995 where it served until the company ceased trading in 2008.
The airline operated three IL-96-300’s each accommodating
up to 300 passengers, from it’s base at Domodedovo Airport.
RA-96006 has been idle for ten years but over the last four months
has been brought back to airworthiness levels permitting it to perform flight once again.
While it was parked up it’s engines were removed and left to rust near by.
Speculation points to the aircraft being flown to a graveyard to be scrapped.
Others suggest this not to be the case as why go to the expense of returning the plane to airworthiness
when it could have been taken apart at Domodedovo Airport.
Leaving it’s undercarriage locked in the landing configuration
which includes that additional center-line bogey like on the Airbus A340,
the flight appears to have taken RA-96006 the short distance to Zhukovsky Airport
and home to Ilyushin Design Bureau
where it will receive a full over-haul and maintenance make-over.
The IL-96, a 3-3-3 cabin layout in economy was unusual in not having overhead bins in the center section.
This also resulted in no air-con vents or reading lights above these passengers but
rather these items could be found in the seat-back in front.
The question is if RA-96006 is being readied for a return to passenger service with an airline
due to recently strained relations between Russia and the West.
Even though policy suggests Russia’s favour to return to home produced aircraft,
it’s unlikely this IL-96 will see active commercial service, due to it’s age, uneconomical fuel consumption,
high operating costs and so on.
A more realistic outcome is that 006 will perform a role with one of the Government Agencies.
Currently it’s sister-ship IL-96 RA-96009 is due
to join the Flight Research Institute, M.Gromov once released from Ilyushin at Zhukovsky.
