3 A350s for Luftwaffe

Post by Gerard »

The German Air Force is planning to buy 3 A350s at 150 million euros each, to replace the two 20-years old A340s.
The A350s should be operational in 2020 already.
To speed up the delivery, they might be ordered with normal (First-, Business-, Economy-Class) seating, instead of a luxury interior.

The Defence Ministry and particularly Luftwaffe's VIP-Unit (Flugbereitschaft) is under quite some pressure to improve the reliability of their fleet, after facing some embarrassing situations recently.
Chancellor Merkel came late to a G20 meeting in Buenos Aires, after her flight had to divert to Cologne after suffering a complete comms-breakdown over the Netherlands, and a minister and President Steinmeier got stuck in Zambia and Ethiopia respectively, due to technical problems on their aircraft.

Shouldn't the type be ACJ350-941? If not mistaken this is the designation for new build corporate jets. If build as airliner and retrofitted it would become A350-941CJ.

A350 c/n 416 F-WZFF wil go to Lufthansa Technik as D-AKAY for outfitting, before taking up its Luftwaffe serial ..+01.
The second one will be c/n 443.

No this has to do with the fact that Airbus changed the designation from e.g. A318 CJ to ACJ318 somewhere in the c/n 4xxx series I believe.

Airbus has transferred the first of three A350-900s for the federal German government
to Hamburg for outfitting at the Lufthansa Technik facility.

The aircraft flew from the airframer’s Hamburg Finkenwerder plant
to the city’s main international airport on 7 May 2020.

It bears the civil registration D-AGAF
but will be re-registered with the government’s special air wing as ‘10+03’.

The government is set to take delivery of the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered twinjet before the end of July 2020.

Two other aircraft – to be designated ‘10+01’ and ‘10+02’ – are still undergoing manufacture.
They will have a VIP cabin, also installed by Lufthansa Technik, next year.

According to Aeronews, the first example has been handed over today.
Picture on their website clearly shows '10+03'.
