Spent Christmas on the Costa del Sol on a non-spotting break and thought the following information may be useful.Departed BHX at 7am 23rd Deember on Ryanair 737-800 EI-EKF.Bag drop was quick after the desks opened 2 hours before departure,through security in 5 minutes.Quick wander up the main pier to note the night-stoppers and few bits on Elmdon side.Enough time for breakfast and non-priority boarding for a slightly late push-back and departure.Cloudy nearly all the way down to Malaga but skies cleared about 15 mins out enabling views down to Gibraltar as we descended over the sea to land at 11am.Few biz-jets observed on landing as well as some planes at the Museum next to the GA area.Baggage was delivered in about 15 mins then off to the Melia Costa del Sol hotel by pre-booked private car which too about 15 mins.Hotel is on the beach with 2 blocks in a V shape with pool at ground level between.We had 2 adjoining rooms on right hand side of the left block facing the sea.Planes could be seen landing over the sea if arriving from the right hand side and some departures if taking off over the sea.However all traffic could be seen if landing from or taking off towards the sea from the beach and the rooftop pool/terrace/bar area on top of our block.This was open from 10am till 7pm.I imagine rooms on the left hand side of our block would give similar views.
The hotel was a very good standard,excellent food choice for breakfast and dinner and free wi-fi.Weather was sunny with clear skies and temperatures in the low 20`s C.OTT traffic was busy with 2 airways going NE-SW right over the resort from central Europe to the Canaries,Morocco,Cape Verde,West Africa and South America.Unfortunately the main Airways to the Canaries were slightly West and out of view.Some traffic into Lisbon from the South could also be seen.
Spent a morning on the roof on Tuesday and walked around the resort during the first 3 days including Christmas day.The airport was open but arrivals were quiet.On Boxing Day had a pass out for a visit to the airport so got the local train service from Torremolinos station about 10 mins up the hillside steps and in the town centre from the hotel at about 8.30am.Trains were running every 20 mins and took 10 mins to the airport after 4 stops at a cost of 4.10 Euros return.(Note the railway ran on Xmas day and Boxing Day!) The station at the Airport is just across a pedestrian bridge to the terminal.Couldn`t find any views from here and the old terminal was closed and seemed derelict.Had contacted the museum before we left to check when they would be open and was told closed tues and Xmas day but open again 10 till 2 Thursday.Took about 10 mins from the terminal right as you come out to get there and it has a raised decking viewing area giving good views over all the parked GA aircraft and biz-jets and aircraft taking off towards the sea once they become airborne.Outside the Museum are the Convair 440,Beech 18 and dilapidated DH Dove with a DC-3 on the street behind.The museum itself is well worth a look inside consisting of several buildings including the original Terminal dating from 1948.

Today arrivals were busy with a large amount of biz-jets.I left the area at about 2.30 and it still seemed to be open to get some food from the terminal as there was nothing at the Museum.At the footbridge to the train station arrivals from inland and departures towards the sea could be seen.Left at 4pm as one of our group had been hospitalised with a stomach bug.Friday was spent at the hotel waiting for her discharge from the clinic which was at 2pm and picked up at 5pm for our transfer back.Again bag drop and security done in about half an hour.Departure time was due to be 1940 but due to late arrival we left about 40 mins late.There was a constant stream of biz-jets during the day including 789 A6-PFE which parked next to the GA area and some had now started to park on a remote apron on the far side of the terminal next to the new second runway.As we departed the GA area seemed to be full with about 30-40 on the ground.EI-FOO was our chariot back to Brum in 2.40 hours.Nothing much of interest as we arrived at 10pm.Not complete logs follow for Malaga and OTT traffic just stuff noted whilst exploring the local area on foot.
