01/30/2020 | Montevideo
After some period of uncertainty, finally the Naval Aviation of Uruguay
received the second-hand Bell OH-58A + Kiowa helicopter
that it acquired in Canada last year.
The aforementioned aircraft was purchased by tender from a private user in the province of Quebec, in Canada.
Built in 1971, with the serial number 7120493, for the US Army,
it is powered by a 317 horsepower Allison 250-C18 engine, manned by a pilot, co-pilot and two passengers.
This aircraft has an excellent maintenance history and still has a high remaining flight hours available,
which is vital for Uruguayan Naval Aviation,
as it currently has no available means of rotating wings.
The fundamental task that will be accomplished in the force will be
the training of pilots in anticipation of the reception of two Agusta Bell 412 helicopters from Italy,
also second-hand, which is expected to be effective in the coming months.
Capacity recovery
Uruguayan Naval Aviation is in a slow process of capacity recovery,
after going through the worst operational moment in its history in recent years.
The reception of three Cessna O-2 Skymaster from Chile
along with the acquisition of these three helicopters
have given respite to the naval wings.
Together with this material,
work is being carried out on the complete set-up of the force's flagship aircraft,
the Beechcraft B200T Super King Air license plate Armada 871,
which has had a complete cell tour,
engine blades and some improvements in its electronics,
including the modernization of its meteorological radar
and is expected to be returning to active service in the month of March 2020.
The incorporation of more Beechcraft T-34C-1 Turbo Mentor light attack and training aircraft is still pending,
of which the possibility of incorporating some decommissioned by the Ecuadorian Air Force had been analyzed,
which has been ruled out,
for concentrate on trying to acquire some cells that are preserved in the United States.
