Delta Air Lines Will Retire Its Entire Boeing 777 Fleet This Year

Delta Air Lines has today revealed plans to simplify its widebody fleet amid the current coronavirus pandemic.

Specifically, it says it will retire all 18 of its Boeing 777 by the end of this year,
a move that it says will modernize its fleet.

Delta has been flying the 777 for over two decades and has both the -200 and -200LR in its fleet.
While some of the oldest are over 20 years in service,
the 10 long-range variants are only just past a decade in age.

Still, Delta states that this will be a positive move for the airline.
It will focus on the A350-900s for its long-haul needs,
which it says offer a 21% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to the 777.
The A330s will stay also,
but there’s no word yet on the fate of its aging fleet of Boeing 767s.

Bizarrely, the airline had only recently completed a $100m fleet-wide renovation of its 777s,
bringing the first back into service in January 2019.

f you’re looking to catch one final ride on this Boeing widebody, you better start planning now.
The final two flights are as follows,
according to Cirium schedules and confirmed by a carrier spokesperson.

Oct. 30: Delta Flight 8787 ATL — LAX, 3 p.m. — 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 31: Delta Flight 8807 JFK — LAX, 1 p.m. — 4 p.m.

Of course, there’s a possibility that the dates and timing shift.
Over the past few months, there’s been an increased number of pandemic-related schedule changes across airlines.

So while these are the final scheduled flights, anything could theoretically change at the last minute.

it is important to remember that this type is relatively young compared to other of Delta’s planes and entire fleet types.
Delta only had 18 777s in its fleet.

The Boeing 777 is an iconic aircraft,
and Delta had an opportunity to work with Boeing to design and get the aircraft into service.

Subsequently, in 1999, Delta Air Lines received its first Boeing 777-200ER on March 24th of that year.
The aircraft had 277 seats onboard.
