Batajnica: With the manifestation "Trace in Infinity", the legendary hunter of the MIG-21 of the Serbian Army, after almost 60 years, was ceremoniously sent to retirement
Friday, May 21, 2021
Minister of Defense Nebojsa Stefanovic
and Commander of the Air Force and Air Defense, Lieutenant General Dusko Zarkovic,
attended today at the military airport "Colonel Pilot Milenko Pavlovic"
the manifestation "Trace in Infinity",
which symbolically ended the working life of the legendary MiG-21 fighter in the Serbian Air Force.
For a full 58 years, pilots guarded the sky with the help of this plane,
which was procured from the Soviet Union from 1962 to 1986.
It is a supersonic aircraft of the second generation, the holder of several air records.
A total of 11,496 MiG-21s were produced in 32 versions,
which is the highest in the history of aviation for one type of military aircraft.
It has been used for six decades on four continents in the air forces of more than 60 countries,
and in many it is still used today, it is stated in the announcement of the Ministry of Defense.
Assistant for Operations of the Commander of the 204th Air Brigade, Colonel Dejan Beda,
who spent many years in the cockpit of the MiG-21,
reminded that the story of the "twenty units" is inextricably linked to the Batajnica airport,
because every specimen that ever arrived in our military aviation took off.
from that runway and landed on it.
The first unit armed with 41 F-13 MiG-21s was the 204th Fighter Aviation Regiment.
By the end of 1964, the 204th Regiment had three squadrons armed with those planes.
For the first four years of using this plane, there were no two-seater,
but the pilots were trained and maintained on American-made TV-2 planes, Beda pointed out.
Former military pilot-instructor on MiG-21 Borisa Mandic
greeted those gathered on behalf of the Aviation Foundation "Pilot Mihajlo Petrovic" and the Association of Supersonic Pilots.
"The veteran who is behind us has finished his career and is going down in history, not retirement.
Today, our feelings are mixed, at least for us who have spent our entire working life in the cabin of this supersonic plane.
But that veteran left an indelible mark in the sky of this country ",
said Mandić and emphasized that that is exactly why this manifestation was called" Trace in Infinity ".
The legendary MiG-21 was symbolically greeted with a traditional water triumphal arch as part of its long service in our military aviation.
