The airline expects to use the long-haul aircraft, which is popular with customers and crews, again from summer 2023. The company is currently assessing how many A380s will be reactivated and which destinations the Airbus will fly to.

Lufthansa still has 14 Airbus A380s, which are currently parked in Spain and France for long-term so called “deep storage”. Six of these aircraft have already been sold, eight A380s remain part of the Lufthansa fleet for the time being.

Lufthansa is attributing the return of the Airbus A380 to two factors:

The steep rise in customer demand, as we’re seeing the demand for international air travel recover more quickly than airlines had anticipated

The delayed delivery of aircraft on order; in particular, the Boeing 777X has been delayed by at least five years, and now won’t enter service until at least 2025

Lufthansa has brought its first super jumbo to the Munich location. It is now likely that the A380 will also fly some short-haul routes before the long-haul start.

Superjumbo trainings are coming up

Lufthansa's A380 crews will be trained both in the simulator and in flight training
- probably also at Dresden, Leipzig/Halle and Hanover airports, as Lufthansa explained in March 2023 .

At first it didn't sound as if the airline would also use the A380 on regular short-haul routes with passengers as part of the training.

But now the chances of that happening are increasing.
"The next few weeks are primarily intended for training,
both for the cabin crews and for the cockpit crews,"
said A380 chief training captain Richard Lenz on Lufthansa's Instagram channel.


"Also some short-haul flights probably"

“That means we will conduct flight training with the aircraft. The colleagues will train in the simulator,” says Lenz.

"And then we'll probably do some short-haul flights to be ready to fly to Boston on June 1."

From June 1st, Boston will be Lufthansa's first regular destination for the reactivated A380s from Munich.

From July 4th, New York JFK will be added as a second destination .

Lufthansa’s first commercial flight with the Airbus A380 in three years has taken off on June 1, 2023.

The aircraft, registered as D-AIMK, is currently in the air,
flying between Munich Airport (MUC) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) on flight LH424.

The Airbus A380 returned to the German airline’s fleet after more than three years,
when a large majority of bigger, quad-engine aircraft were grounded during the COVID-19 pandemic
due to a lack of demand for air travel and the aircraft’s exuberant operating costs.
