Ukrainian Sky Up evacuates its last Boeing 737 from Kyiv

Since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine,
a Sky Up Boeing 737 has remained in Kyiv. Now the jet has left the country.

04/05/23 - 10:02

When the Russian army began attacking Ukraine in February 2022,
most of Sky Up's planes were already abroad.

But a Boeing 737-800 of the Ukrainian low-cost airline was still at Kyiv-Boryspil Airport.

The attempt to fly out the jet with the registration number UR-SQP in time failed.

The machine was already in the air on February 24, 2022,
but was ordered back by air traffic control because the airspace was closed to civil air traffic.

Boeing 737 brought to Romania

Despite everything, the airline has now flown the UR-SQP out of Ukraine.

On the evening of April 4, 2023, the machine left Kyiv-Boryspil and flew to Iasi in Romania,
as the Ukrainian portal Avianews first reported.

The cockpit crew possibly only switched on the transponder south of the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi
and thus immediately before the border.

At least that's where the route begins to be recorded by the Flightradar 24 service.

The airline has not yet commented on what made the evacuation possible.

Few known evacuations

According to Avianews, it is only the third successful evacuation of a passenger plane since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Accordingly, in April 2022, Windrose flew an ATR 72 out of Lviv,
and in September, Wizz Air flew an Airbus A320.

In the military field, Turkey also flew out two Airbus A400s from Kyiv-Boryspil in December 2022.
