Many residents of the German region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe and the area around Hanover \
were shocked on Monday
because they heard two very loud explosions.

People called emergency services, thinking they were explosions.

But it was the sonic booms of two jet fighters that turned out for a Transavia aircraft.

Air traffic control was unable to make contact with the 737, which was en route from Mykonos to Schiphol.

It is then customary for fighter jets to turn out to see what is going on and to intervene if necessary.

That also happened on Monday:
two Luftwaffe Eurofighters departed from Rostock-Laage airport
towards the Transavia aircraft, breaking the sound barrier.

“Sonic boom over Hanover.
Our Quick Reaction Alert (two Eurofighters) took off from Laage to check an aircraft bound for Amsterdam without radio contact.

Contact was restored when the pilot spotted us south of Munster.

The passenger plane has now landed safely in Amsterdam," the Luftwaffe said on Twitter.

It turned out that nothing was wrong, and the Transavia 737 was able to continue to Schiphol.

But in the regions where the explosions were heard, it is the talk of the day.

Dozens of regional media write about it, and there are thousands of tweets about it on Twitter.

According to some witnesses, their windows and crockery shook from the explosions.

Any damage can be reported via a special citizen hotline.

The Transavia aircraft involved is the 737-700 with registration PH-XRY.

That is the only aircraft that still carries the old color scheme of the Dutch airline.

Whatever happened to the old slogan “military jet noise, the sound of freedom”, I wonder…

Would they rather have had a real rogue aircraft over their heads?

...once upon a time, there were supersonic Starfighters in daily operation over Europe.

They "boom'ed" several days a week....
