Elly Sallingboe
the operator of Europe’s last airworthy Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy WWII bomber
announced that the Sally B has been grounded with immediate effect.

On May. 24, 2023 Elly Sallingboe, operator of Boeing B-17G 44-85784, (G-BEDF) to most people known as ‘Sally B’,
announced that it has grounded the plane with immediate effect
after inspections of other B-17s revealed wing spar issues.

Due to the grounding today’s planned Crew Training at Duxford will not take place
and the following planned displays by The Sally B have been cancelled.

The official Statement

“After careful consideration it has now been decided to ground our beloved B-17 until the ongoing wing spar issues is sorted.

As I write this, we are working flat out to complete this difficult task, helped by our devoted team and many friends.

Thank you IWM Duxford for giving us space in the AirSpace Hangar to carry out the required work.

As we mentioned previously our Chief Engineer, Daryl Taplin, is in contact with the FAA, the CAA,
and some US B-17 Operators via the B-17 Co-op.

The wing spar and the spar caps have been the subject of earlier AD’s for more than twenty years.
