Irkut Corporation will be renamed under the prominent name Yakovlev
07/27/2023 - 11:00 am

Irkut Corporation will be renamed Yakovlev, with the migration taking place by the end of August 2023.

Irkut is the manufacturer of the MC-21 and also produces the Superjet 100 and its successor, the SSJ-New.

The Yakovlev design office is already part of Irkut,
but the long-standing name – after Soviet aeronautical engineer Alexander Yakovlev –
is to be adopted throughout the company.

Irkut Director General Andrei Boginsky points to Yakovlev's oversight
of organizing aircraft production during World War II
and says this "resonates" with the current task
of uniting the Russian civil aviation industry in the face of "new challenges" .

“We must not only preserve, but develop this heritage,” adds Boginsky.

Irkut is set to become the main supplier of new aircraft for Russian companies,
as a result of international sanctions that prevent the delivery of foreign types, including Airbus and Boeing models.

Out of the projected demand for 500 civil aircraft from Russian airlines by 2030,
Irkut is likely to supply 270 MC-21s and 142 SSJ-New,
the Russian state technology corporation said.

“We are overcoming dependence on imports and aim to fully equip our airlines with domestic aircraft
comparable [to Western models] in quality, reliability and other characteristics,”
insists Rostec head Sergei Chemezov.

Irkut has developed over the past two decades into a company employing around 20,000 people,
and the rebranding to Yakovlev takes into account its geographic growth and increased competence in civil aviation.

The company has not yet confirmed whether the MC-21 and SSJ-New will undergo any designation changes.

Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, during a visit to the Irkut facility,
signaled that the MC-21 would eventually be redesignated the Yak-242
once it entered series production.

The Yak-242 designation was previously used for a proposed 180-seat jet that eventually evolved into the MC-21.

“Next year, we will start the first deliveries of fully import-replaced passenger aircraft –
with domestic systems, engines and other components,” says Chemezov.

Rostec revealed the rebranding of Irkut during the week the MAKS Moscow 2023 air show was supposed to be taking place.

But the show's organizers recently confirmed that the event was being canceled and would be held in 2024 and 2025.
