Thirteen years after the bankruptcy, Mexicana will make its comeback in December. The Mexican government announced earlier this year that it wanted to revive the renowned airline, but as a low-cost airline.
Mexicana de Aviación was founded in 1921 and was one of the oldest airlines in the world at the time of its bankruptcy. The company focused on domestic flights and connections to North and South American countries, as well as flights to Europe. Mexico's second largest airline was a major user of the Fokker 100 and also flew the Airbus A318, A319 and A320. Boeing 767s and Airbus A330s were used for the handful of long-haul routes.
Over the years, there were several attempts to make a restart with Mexicana, but those attempts came to nothing. At the beginning of this year, the Mexican government announced that it had purchased the remnants of the company.
The plan is now to market Mexicana as a low-cost carrier, as a competitor to Volaris, Viva Aerobus and AeroMexico. The Mexican government promises ticket prices that are 20 percent lower than those of its competitors.
Its home base will be Felipe Angeles International Airport, Mexico City's second largest airport. Mexicana should initially have a fleet of ten Boeing 737-800s.
