The last active Ilyushin Il-96-300 in commercial passenger service with Cubana de Aviación
has returned to Havana after undergoing maintenance in Russia.
Cubana de Aviación has struggled in recent years with a dwindling fleet,
but the return of the Il-96-300 will double its capacity.
The resurgence of the Il-96 aircraft type is happening
due to recent difficulty of Russian operators to continue operating Western-built aircraft.
After flying through rain storms over the Atlantic on the way from Gander, Canada (YQX),
the last active Ilyushin Il-96-300 in commercial passenger service with Cubana de Aviación
returned to its home at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuba on December 3rd, 2023 .
The Il-96-300, registered CU-T1250, had spent the last sixteen months in Russia undergoing heavy maintenance.
Taking off from Russia's Zhukovsky Airport,
the aircraft arrived in Gander at just after 2 AM local time.
After a couple of hours on the ground to refuel, it headed south,
tracking down the east coast of the USA before finally reaching Havana at 8 AM today.
