No Swedish Nato membership unless...new jets for .Tr

Post by Glidepath »

according to German news outlet: and in brief:
"President of Turkiye demands new US made F-16's before saying 'yes' to Sweden as NATO partner".

One might come to think the earlier post about a bilateral defence agreement between Sweden and the US is somewhat related (see below), if only just to by-pass any Nordic defence issues pending full NATO membership.

He is holding NATO hostage and should learn such a lesson that these thoughts will never ever cross his mind!
Erdogan knows NATO needs Turkey (ehm Türkiye) and he uses that very clever.

Note: The forementioned news article reads "F-16s". Not "F-35s" as one might expect.
(you know, the aircraft type that was blocked by the US due to Turkiye buying Russian high tech Air Defence missles.)
Seems they have given up on the goal getting F-35s all together.

It will happen eventually (F16 and Membership). Just politics.

Do you have a source?
No other news site with this 'news' and this has been an item in the negotiations already for months.

One might come to think the earlier post about a bilateral defence agreement between Sweden and the US is somewhat related (see below), if only just to by-pass any Nordic defence issues pending full NATO membership.
Not mentioned in the earlier article afaik, but published yesterday was this:
The leader of Turkiye will not agree on Sweden as a new member unless his country gets the green light from the US-government for exporting an unspecified number of new F-16s, but he simultaneously demands lifting arms export ban by other NATO-members, with Canada being mentioned as one of those nations.

Sweden has complied with his demands, but he seems to be upping the stakes and is playin' hard ball, So far I haven't seen news on the US standpoint on new F-16s for Turkiye. Nor the number.
Speaking out fiercely by Turkiye's leader against US Ally Israel is unlikely to make it any easier getting approval for the desired F-16 export deal.

Meanwhile the Swedish gov. has formalised access by US forces to a fair number of their mil. facilities.

And then there's Hungary that also has to ratify and doesn't want to...

https://www.reuters.com/world/turkey-se ... 024-01-23/
Turkey's parliament ratified Sweden's NATO membership bid on Tuesday, clearing the biggest remaining hurdle to expanding the Western military alliance after 20 months of delay.
Turkey's general assembly, where President Tayyip Erdogan's ruling alliance holds a majority, voted 287-55 to approve the application that Sweden first made in 2022 to bolster its security in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Erdogan, who had sent Sweden's bid to parliament in October, linked the ratification to U.S. approval of sales of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.
The White House backs the sale and some analysts expect a deal to swiftly follow Turkey's approval of Sweden's bid. But there is no clear time frame for the U.S. Congress to approve the deal.
