Ukraine receives Bundeswehr helicopters for the first time

Published on 01/23/2024

Germany wants to provide Ukraine with Bundeswehr helicopters for the first time.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that
six Sea King helicopters from the German Navy,
which will no longer be used by the Bundeswehr anyway,
will be delivered from the second quarter.

Pistorius promised the delivery on Tuesday (today)
at the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group , the so-called Ramstein format.
From the ministry's statement:

In 2024, Germany will further increase support for Ukraine with six SEA KING Mk41 multi-purpose helicopters from the Bundeswehr.

The delivery includes an extensive accessories and spare parts package
as well as aviation and technical training support.
Submission will be possible from the second quarter of 2024.

Minister Pistorius said at today's meeting:
“The SEA KING is a proven and robust helicopter
that will help Ukrainians in many areas: from reconnaissance over the Black Sea to transporting soldiers.
It is the first German delivery of its kind.

According to the defense department, Pistorius also promised further German deliveries to Ukraine,
with IRIS-T and Gepard,
additional artillery and artillery ammunition,
over 80 Leopard 1 A5 battle tanks
as well as additional armored personnel carriers,
engineer tanks and
bridge-laying tanks,
450 protected vehicles,
other systems for mine clearance,
as well as drones, radars and reconnaissance systems.

Germany had already announced this material previously.

The Navy's Sea King helicopters are currently being replaced by new Sea Lion helicopters based on the NH90 model,
which is being built by Airbus in Donauwörth.

The Bundeswehr's Sea King were put into service in the 1970s .
In recent years, the most important task has been sea rescue.

Addition: Great Britain had already promised Ukraine three helicopters of this type in November 2022 , the first of which was delivered in January last year . There was a BBC report on their use here last year .

The “Sea King” will be decommissioned on August 31, 2024 and some machines will be handed over to Ukraine.

...but that is in the summer, and not in Kiel... :|

Attention spotters: Goodbye seaking

Mar 19, 2024 |

Since 1974 he has accompanied citizens in Kiel and the surrounding communities in the skies over Schleswig-Holstein,
no matter what the weather was like, whether it was “imperial weather” or a typical North German storm.

We have lived with the engine noise of the “Sea Kings” for decades.
With the relocation of Naval Aviation Squadron 5 to Nordholz/Lower Saxony in 2012, the skies over Kiel became quiet.

On March 20, 1974, the first landing of a “Seaking” took place in Kiel Holtenau.
The machines were built by Westland in Yeovil, England and then transferred to Germany (Kiel).
They were the modernization of the Navy's search and rescue service with 23 of these very reliable and, at the time, modern machines,
some of which are still used today in many Western nations.

Now, 50 years later, two of these very reliable machines are returning to their old home.
It was the Marine Squadron 5 Kiel Holtenau, which was set up on July 1, 1958.
The property was closed in 2012 as part of the structural reform
and Naval Aviation Squadron 5 was relocated to Nordholz near Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony.

On March 20, 2024,
the aircraft with the identification numbers 89+63 and 89+58 will fly a “farewell lap” over Kiel again
before landing in Kiel-Holtenau at around 2 p.m.
on the area of the former naval aviation squadron.

They are accompanied by a helicopter and its successor model, the “Sea Lion”, an MH 90 helicopter.

The “Sea King” will be decommissioned on August 31, 2024 and some machines will be handed over to Ukraine.

Below is the plan for the anniversary day in March/Maart/Maerz:

1:00 p.m. Departure of helicopters 89+63 and 89+58 from Nordholz

1.50 p.m. flypast Laboe and flight along the Kiel Fjord

1:55 p.m. flight over Kiel Town Hall

1:57 p.m. flypast of the State House

2 p.m. Landing Kiel Holtenau coming from the fjord (depending on the wind)

Ukraine conflict: Norway to donate Sea King helicopter parts

2024-07-09

Norway is to send Westland Sea King spare parts to Ukraine to help support helicopters operated in the Black Sea region by the Ukrainian Sea Guard.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the donation on 9 July 2024,
saying that it has decided to send the parts as the search-and-rescue (SAR) helicopters themselves are no longer airworthy.

“The Sea King helicopters were in service in Norway from 1973 until 2023,
and have now been replaced by SAR Queen [Leonardo AW101 Merlin] helicopters.

The Norwegian helicopters have reached their maximum number of flight hours, and cannot be donated,” the MoD said.

With three UK-donated Sea Kings now operating in the littoral region of the Black Sea,
Germany has pledged to send six of its recently retired Sea Kings as well.

Norway is donating spare parts in connection with the six aircraft being donated by Germany, the MoD said.
