Flyvevåbnet Challenger replacement

Post by Herby »

The small but heavily worn CL604 Challenger fleet of the Danske Flyvevåbnet will be supplemented first (by a leased type) and replaced later by a new type in the not too near future.

Many missions like SAR, fishery protection, sea surveillance, VIP, water protection, anti piracy, arctic missions, MEDEVAC and many more were fulfilled by the Challenger after it replaced the bigger Gulfstream IIIA from 1999.

The long flights to and from Greenland and over the Baltic Sea took their toll and often not more than one or two aircrafts were available by Eskradrille 721 at Aalborg at any given time, sometimes even less.

The squadron operates three multi-mission Challenger (C-080, C-168 and C-172) and one (C-215) for VIP duties. If the latter isn’t available sometimes one of the other three has to replace it to carry the Danish Royal family or high politicans through Europe.

The P-8A Poseidon could be a good successor, but if Denmark is really willing to afford 3-4 aircrafts the not too far future will tell.
