LOG Taiwan trip day 2 (24-11-2024)

Post by patrick dirksen »

Hi all,

Although it was by far not long enough to catch up on the missed sleep during my flight in, it was good to have spent the night in bed instead of an airplane, and being able to shower and have a (rather) decent breakfast made it even better. After that we were ready for day two. First stop of the day would be Chiayi AFB, to see if there would be some activity with their F-16s. As it was Sunday, our expectations were rather low, but we were proven wrong.

Chiayi AFB

6609 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6614 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6615 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6624 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6627 F-16A-72V 4 TFW
6643 F-16A-72V 4 TFW
6646 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 23 TFG
6684 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6695 F-16A-72V 4 TFW
6701 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 23 TFG
6710 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 22 TFG
6717 F-16A-72V 4 TFW, 22 TFG
6802 F-16B-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
6809 F-16B-72V 4 TFW, 23 TFG
6819 F-16B-72V 4 TFW, 22 TFG
6826 F-16B-72V 4 TFW, 21 TFG
(5003) Fokker 50 (overhead)
938/(27323) UH-60M no mks, apart from red cross (Air Rescue Sq)
940/27326 UH-60M no mks, apart from red cross (Air Rescue Sq)

As you can see, it turned out they were very active this Sunday morning. Thanks again for the advice, Stefan G!
The Fokker 50 came overhead, the serial is taken from ADSB. These aircraft and the single B.737 are the only ones that show on flight radar apps by the way, unfortunately. When all aircraft of the morning wave had returned, we started our drive further south while hunting for w&r.

In park, Chiayi

5251/70334 F-5E pr, 8 TFG mks

Another Tiger in a small park. And on we went.

Yu De Vocational School, Xinying

(367) UH-1H GIA, no mks, c/n plate removed and serial overpainted
NA-514 UH-1H GIA, ex NASC, c/n 18080, ex ROC army 380/64-2080

Both are under a shed and are easily visible from outside.
Next stop was Yuashui where a civilian B.737 (HS-BRC) is preserved (no, not of interest for me… 😉 ), plus what looks like a homebuilt resembling a PL-1. We then quickly continued.

Haipuchi Palace, Haipuli (Madou)

5121/40978 F-5E pr, 46 TFS mks
(2102) TH-55 pr, no mks, c/n 980722

These are in the parking lot of a giant temple. After photographing the aircraft we also had a look around the temple, a really beautiful one. Anybody who knows which unit of the RoC Army did operate the TH-55 by the way? Or were there more units?
And then it was time for the next location with some items that were very high on our W&R wish list: Trackers!

Anping Harbor National Historical Park, Tainan

4254/60846 F-104A pr, no mks
1024/11024 HU-16A pr, no mks
2103 S-2A pr, no mks
7010 S-70C-1A pr, Air Rescue Sq, no c/n plate
2833/13664 T-28A pr, AFFTC mks
3338/57-0532 T-33A pr, no mks

All these are spread out in a park along the coastline and look pristine. We got here with last light, just in time for some nice photographs.
Just around the corner is another Tracker, that we had to digitalise without daylight though.

Te Yang Destroyer museum, Tainan

5364/70346 F-5F pr, 7 TFG mks
2211 S-2T pr, no mks

Two versions of the S-2 within 15 minutes, both in different colour schemes, beautiful. The F-5 was a pleasant surprise, it wasn’t known to be here. AFAIK it was last noted stored at the museum in Gangshan, it was probably prepared for display there before moving here. The aircraft are within the area of the museum by the way, but during opening hours they are freely accessible and outside those hours they can be seen (and photographed) from the public road.

Shuei Jiao She Cultural Park, Tainan

5229/61624 F-5E pr, 1 TFG mks, camo c/s
(6)299/113364 F-86F pr, Thunder Tiger mks

Both aircraft are at opposite corners of this park. The F-86 is well lit, photographing the F-5 was much more difficult without daylight. But both look very nice, so it was worth the effort.

National Cheng Kung University, Tainan

NA-506 UH-1H pr, NASC c/s, c/n 18105 and ex 405/65-2105

Still not satisfied we decided we would give this one a try before heading to our hotel. Being a Sunday evening the school was closed obviously and access by car was not possible, but the Huey is parked near the entrance and we could walk up there without problem. So that ended another fruitful day.

That’s all folks!
