Req : Lajes Field spotting conditions

Post by K-9 »

Hello,

Are there persons who have been to Lajes field in the past and can tell me more about the spotting facilities at the base and perhaps provide a note of flightactivities ?
I'm planning to go over there in the near future.

Thanks in advance.

Rene,

I have been to Lajes last year. Spotting conditions are very, very good. Almost along the whole side of the runway there is a dirt road along the fence. The big military platforms are on the other side of the runway and you can see everything. You should be a little carefull though, I have read the USAF police is not happy with too many people watching planes....
If you arrive at Lajes, you will immidiatly see the open platforms from the plane and also from the (very small) terminal you already have excellent views of the whole base.
Activity is unpredictable. One day nothing, the next day it is hot. Most visitors however are night stoppers, arriving in the late afternoon. If you stay in Praia de Vitoria, you can see the planes coming right overhead when landing (or taking off of course) and this can give you some idea of what is happening. Civil activity is not so much; SATA, SATA International, TAP and some US carriers flying for the US military.
