Log Crete 30-08 - 09-09-2007

Post by DJMikey »

Been on holiday to Crete. Despite it wasn't a spotterholiday, I still managed to see some interesting stuff. Feel free to fill in the gaps if you can!

30-08 Heraklion:
F5A Hellenic AF (ex USAF) 13371
F5B Hellenic AF ... (dumped near runway)

30-08-2007 Koutouloufari:
2 x F16C Hellenic AF ... (to Kastelli)
2 x F4E Hellenic AF ... (to Kastelli)

31-08-2007 Koutouloufari:
P3B Hellenic Navy 152744
C130H Hellenic AF ... (landed at Heraklion)

03-09-2007 Koutouloufari:
C130H Hellenic AF ... (landed at Heraklion)

05-09-2007 Koutouloufari:
G1159D ... (landed at Heraklion)

06-09-2007 Koutouloufari:
F16C Hellenic AF 120 (landed at Kastelli)
2 x F16C Hellenic AF ... (landed at Kastelli)

06-09-2007 Kastelli:
2 x F16C Hellenic AF ... (on ramp Kastelli)
F5A Hellenic AF 69133 (preserved on pole Kastelli main entrance)

06-09-2007 Heraklion:
CC144B Canadian Forces 144616

07-09-2007 Heraklion:
C130H Hellnic AF 743
Mi 26 Scorpion RA06276

That's all folks. Again, feel free to fill in the gaps if you know them.
And another queastion. I never saw any reports about Kastelli before on the messageboard. As I could see it was still active, security was very tight, so I didn't spend to much time driving around the base ... obviously to avoid getting picked up. Does anyone know if and how many F16's or other Hellenic AF-planes are based their?
By the way, I talked to local Greeks and they mentioned Kastelli will be closed as a military base within 8 years and transformed to a large civil airfield like Heraklion. Because of that Heraklion will be closed.

Hey Mike,

How on earth did you manage to read that P-3??
Nice catch though.....

Kastelli is mainly used for exercises and temp detachments.
No aircraft are perminent stationed here.

Talk to you soon!

Regards, Rob.

Greets, Mike.

Hi Mike,

I did posted some Kastelli LOGS from some years ago. Normally 2 till 4 F-16's from all HAF units will be deployed to Kastelli for a week. They arrive on Friday (the one's which are there depart). Monday till Friday they will fly 2 missions a day, one around 10:00 and one at 14:00.
Normally a mission will take 45 minutes. Friday there will be no mission and wednesday will be nightflying.

This is what I experienced in 2001 , 2003, 2004 and 2006

There is a place you can read the F-16's on the ramp, they are standing just 20mtrs in front of you. Only it 's a bit difficult to explain

I don't think they will close heraklion, they just finished the new ramps, also is the runway at Kastelli far to short.

Hope this helps

Log Heraklion 7-9

Post by Tijgermot »

When I peaked out of the window from ArkeFly 767, just before take off, I saw an AB205A sitting on the Tarmac.
local time: 13.30 hr.

Took a picture, and now I can confirm it was AB205A 4399

Kind regards
Jerry
