I was there last september and found a nice sport with good light, single glass and seats... quite comfy... It was only a short walk from a food/shop court. Checked my pics, only gate/parking number visible on them is gates 207 . Hope it helps!

It is very dependent on the terminal you are in. For example terminal 4 is pretty good, at least there are enough points with a clear view on the platforms. However, another terminal (I think 3, but I am not sure) was a lot less. You are behind 2 glass walls, with arriving passengers in between.

So, I can't give an answer to the question like this.

I will be there on April 10th on transit...... :) Anyway, from the pictures I have seen the terminal has huge glass windows, so view of the tarmac shouldn't be a problem.
Take a look on Airliners.net.

If you stay airside, then T4 is a perfect spotting place, just at the beginning of rw 27L. We stayed there yesterday, unfortunately the runways changed at 15.00 local so 27L was used as takeoff, so almost everything we had seen arriving came back to this runway for departure...

Log will follow as soon as the regs heve been sorted out 8)

Thanks! What is, in your opinion the best position to see the most foreign airliners?
7.30 - 15.00 departures, after that going to arrivals. What do you think about it?

It all depends on the runway usage... as mentioned earlier we were in T4 looking at landing aircraft on 27L untill 15.00; if they start the day landing at 27R and departing 27L then I guess you can stay put after 15.00.

Hello Boudewijn,

I visited EGLL last monday 7th and tuesday 8th April. Normally I would have lingered on one of the parkings near T1,2,3 but this supposedly is not allowed anymore. After arriving in T4, I tried to get into the departure area via the transfer signs. However, to enter the departure area again, you have to present a departure ticket.
So on monday I watched on the field near Hatton Cross (27L landing rwy) and after 15:00LT I walked to the other side, keeping the maintenance area on the lefthand side and the rest of the day watched near the roundabout below the 27R approach.
On tuesday I watched the movements all day on the "spottersplace" between Bath Road and the Northern Perimeter Road. On Bath Road is a McDonalds, cross the road direction BAA academy and the rwy and you can't miss it. It is covered, carparking (not free) available and a small restaurant in the BAA building. Unfortunately, they planted some trees between the grandstand and the runway.
A rundown of the spots:
In T4 for all runway combination's not possible to score all the numbers and for photography not good.
27L Hatton Cross From T4, underground or free bus (555, 556, 557) to Hatton Cross and walk to field. All landings on 27L OK for numbers/photography. Departures on 27R are partly visible (upper structure and tail) between the hangars but hard to read. After airborne you can see them in the distance. You can read off 27L departures and see 27R landings (with a steady hand and lots of mm even read off??)
Between 27L and 27R Near a busstop is a field with a good view on the 27R approach. Some guys were photographing from there with a lot of mm. 27L not visible.
Roundabout 27R The buses mentioned above should also pass this spot. OK for landings 27R for both numbers and photographs. 27R departures hard to see due to constructionwork and a hill. 27L not visible.
Spottersplace From T4 take free train to T1,2,3. From Heathrow Central Bus Station take free bus 105, 111, 285 direction Bath Road. THIS SPOT IS NOT GOOD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. All movements are visible and ultimately 95% can be read off and with help of the EGLL/EGKK site mentioned above near 100% is possible. You need to note landing/departure times to use the site.
Landings + departures 27R ok, landings 27L visible but hard to read and departures 27L possible to read, but you have to be watchfull though.

Regarding the busnumbers, my hotel was on Bath Road and the hotel provided me with this information: Free Buses to and from Harlington Corner and EGLL are>>>>
105,111 and 285 busstop corner Bath Road/Harlington High Street to EGLL Central Bus Station and vv
555,556 and 557 busstop corner Harlington Street/NorthPerimeter Road to T4 via Hatton Cross and vv
Have a nice time!
