Photo topic: Storm and all other weather

Post by Heron »

Goodmeurnin',

Although the weather forecast didn't look promising, I still took a friend to the Joure Balloonfest on saturday evening.
I had already visited the event on wednesday evening (some pictures can be found HERE), but this time there was a snag...

Normally the first balloon starts around 20:00 hours, but at 19:38 I made this picture:
Image

At 19:41 hours it looked like a scene from the motion picture "Independence Day":

And at 19:45 the view was like this. The little dark cloud in the middle of the picture floats exactly over the starting field:

After that I found it better to go sit and find shelter in my car...

Greetingsenzo,
Bert.

8) Very impressive sight, especially what's captured on photo number 2!!! And you're right, you don't need a lot of imagination to recognise a scene from a certain film in that one!! :D

Stephan

Hope the moderator doesn't really mind..

Same cloud from a little different perspective. I surely have seen some days with better weather :(

Question: Clouds like this are called 'rolwolken', am I right? (Key, I think you should know?)

Correct Jan, rotor cloud in English if I'm not mistaken. They sometimes precede heavy showers. Impressive photo!

Checking some resources, I get: the name is rotor cloud, sometimes referred to as roll cloud. Oh well, what's in a name. 8)

A little storm we had last week here in Canada.
And no, the extra lights are no UFO`s.
No idea how to prevent this.
Any ideas??????

Hiya,

I was probably not that far from where Bert was (Exit Joure-West, on top of the over-pass) and made two with the compact camera, just before we went back to the camping in De Veenhoop.

I also have two short movies but am not sure those are allowed here... (Key ?)

Thankfully i did make some pics on Friday (not online yet).

Hope next year will be better...

Bye, Chris.

Could be the reflections of a UV-filter used (in case you had one in use on your lens).

Thanks Rob,

I indeed use a UV filter.
Next time I will try without it.

Thanks very much,

Rob.

Hi,

I saw you are searching for the name from a " roll cloud " or in Dutch Rolwolk.

As far as i know the name from those clouds is " Shelfcloud ".

Bye the way some very nice photos you all made.
i realy like the lightning shots.
