When going to the Ocean's Tiger Meet Spottersday and the Spottersday of Florennes a trip was made visiting some airfields and doing some VWR hunting, next to visiting the Normandy beaches and related sites.

26-7-2008 NL - Landivisiau
First stop Lille-Lesquin. Main goal the EC145 of the security civile. It was present. The following was logged:

On to the next stop. Although we did not have an appointment we decided our luck at Albert. If not possible now, we could always make an appointment for on the way back to Florennes. We were lucky. Mr Betrancourt would arive in half an hour to open the buildings. In the mean time we were allowed to walk around outside around the sheds.

After Albert we headed for Amiens to check out the Gendarmerie choppers overthere. We were also allowed to visit some hangars, which resulted in a list of ULM regs with a lot of questionmarks on the types....

As we still ha a long way to go we decided to skip some fields. After visiting a German war cemetry (Le Cambe) we headed for Dinan, for the displayed CM170 and a possible F27 fuselage. The F27 was not found. After politely asking, we could walk around and look into some open hangars. The following was logged:

When approaching our next stop an AS350 was noticed heading for that stop, St Brieuc. A quick stop was made, but no AS350 was found. The following was logged:

Now we headed for our hotel in Lampaul-Guimiliau, just a Kms south-east of Landevisiau. On the way there we passed Morlaix and noticed the Fouga of the technical school. As the field was planned to be visited later on we did not visit the field.

27-6-2008
Today the spottersday of Landevisiau was visited. Althoug quite a number of spotters was present all went smoothly and was well arranged. As the logs of the spottersday have been listed several times I will not repeat this.

28-6-2008
The day between the spottersday and the open day. This day was spent to visit Morlaix(collection of the Technical School) and Lannion where a CM170 should be present in the colors of the Patrouille de France. After those two fields we were planning to go back to Landevisiau to whatch some arrivals. Due to bad weather, plans changed when we were watching some artrivals. We decided to move more south and visit some locations we had planned to visit on sunday/monday. These locations were: Brest, Plobannalec and Quimper.

Morlaix:
Not much to see on arrival. Platforms almost empty. All windows of the Technical School blinded. When we went for the Fouga to fotograph it we noticed a door. As all windows were blinded, we just tried our luck.... The door went open and we could see all what was in hangar. After this we went to the platform near the tower where in the meantime some people arrived who wanted to go flying. After asking politely, we were allowed to visit the hangar where they needed to pull out their plane.

After Morlaix, we went on to Lanion. No fouga was noticed, so we asked around and were told it was with the aeroclub at the other side of the field. From the main terminal just keep right around the field. At the aeroclub we again asked politely. Unfortunately we were not allowed in the hangar and when we asked about the Fouga the told us it was not there anymore.

After this last disappointing visit, we headed back for Landevisiau. However the weather was not good, so after a short visit we decided to move to Quimper and Plobannalec via Brest. Later in the afternoon we returned to Landevisiau as the weather got better and there were still rehersals going on. I have merged the logs for Landevisiau

We did not know what to expect at Brest, but a pipercub should be in one of the hangars. On arrival of the field a security civile EC145 passed the field. This one we would meet again at Quimper. We headed for the aeroclub and where allowed in the open hangar. From this hangar we could walk across the platform to another open hangar with a number of homebuilts (F-P regs). But no pipercub. Between the open hangars ther was however one small closed hangar. A hole was found to peak through and the pipercub was found and identified. It is not possbile to look into this hangar from outside.

From Brest it went on to Quimper. An Security Civile EC145 should have his homebase and a Crusader should be stored with the aeroclub. The EC145 had returned in time. The aeroclub had no problems showing us their hangars, but no Crusader was found.

Next stop was the ULM field of Plobannalec. Not for the ULMs, but for the F4 and HSS1s. In the hangar an Etendard and Alouette II where notced, but before identifying them we were send off of the field, which seems to be of a private owner. Outside the following was noticed. Another HSS1 which should be near there according EMOOS was not found.

29-6-2008:
Today the open day at Landevisiau. It started well arranged, but when heading back to the car getting the right bus at teh right spot was really a problem. We menaged to get the right bus out somehow. As the logs of the open day have been listed several times I will not repeat this. After the show we headed for our hotel near Lanveoc where would start the next day. On the way there, Brest was payed another quick visit befor moving into Brest itself where an Super Etendard could be found near the Maritime Museum.

From Avranches we headed north in the direction of Donville le Bain. Neat the horseracetrack in this town, a security civile EC145 should be stationed. Nevertheless the help of Bram (our Tom Tom), who tried to send us over walkways, we found the Security Civile hangar. The EC145 was still in, but the hangar was open. We asked if she could be fotographed and we were told, if we would wait a few minutes she would be outside as they were going out. No problem, we even waited fro take off to have some pics of her flying.

Heading for Cherbourg there was one other stop to be made: Lessay. On this airfield, between to hangars a Broussard should be present. When arriving at the field not much was seen. There's som kind of memorial for a USAF group that flown with Mauraders from this field during WW II for a shor period and also there's a reference to the visit of Charles Lindbergh. As we noticed some people near one of the hangars we decided to walk their way and ask about the Broussard. In front of the hangar we did not need to ask anymore. It was inside that hangar.

The other VWR stuff is inside an Hangar. Unfortunately not the aeroclub hanger which we once again were allowed access to. The nice lady from the aeroclub made some calls for us and someone could show us around the VWR hangar, but than we had to wait for at least an hour. As we had more to do, we thanked her alot for the effort and left.

On the way back to Amiens from which we would drive to Cambrai to finally get some operational militairy hardware logged again we made a small detour via Airaines where a former AdLA N1101 is displayed.

From Amiens we took the motorway to Cambrai. When we passed the height of Albert, we noticed an Beluga landing at Bray. Likely to collect some parts from the nearby Airbus factory. As I already did have all Beluga's logged and Pieter does only Militairy and VWR and Fokkers.... we did not change plans and kept on the motorway heading for Cambrai. Where we would spent about 1,5 hour in the landing near the WW I cemetary. We were happy to see the other tiger Mirage2000.

4-7-2008:
Today the spottersday at Florennes. As our hotel was near by (the nice town of Givet), we were early and with the first bus onto the field. All was arranged very well again. Unfortunately not all confirmed guests showed up. Can happen, but sadly enough it were the more special guests (AN26 Ukraine and Mi17 Hunagary). Some choppers went straight in (RAF squirrels and ALAT gazelle) and were not seen landing. As we drove around the field when we left we noticed those from the west side of the field.

Hi Arjen,

A superb report, my compliments - it makes such a difference to get a wee story with the log. However we went to Plobannalec on Thursday 26th June and spoke with the owner who let us roam all over and take what pictures we wanted, he is actually a really good guy.

In the yard at the back there were six HSS-1s not five, we have photographs. Another guy also went the following day and noted six and said that the place where EMOOS stated the sixth one was had been cleared out. So sorry, there were all six.

Regards

Hello again,

Sorry I should also have said that at Plobannalec, the Etendard was 14 and the Alouette was 809, again photographed. EMOOS quite correct in that.

Rick,

Thanks for the update and good to hear you liked the story.

I found another interresting story on the Dakota in Merville (Source: http://www.gatwickaviationsociety.org.uk).

71248 (cn19539) ex-Yugoslav AF. ‘Discovered' at Rajlovac [T9] and donated by the Bosnian Government to Batterie Merville for display in the town of Merville-Franceville , France. Roaded to Caen-Carpiquet [F] 28Nov-06Dec07for restoration in its original USAAF markings, 43-15073. Interestingly, this airframe was once OK-XDM, the registration used on the DC-3 preserved outside the CSA head office in Prague .

The codes noted for the Gendarmerie AS350s at Amiens differ when one compares your 1st visit and the visit when going back north.
JCL and JCR versus JCN and JCR. The numbers are probably deducted from the codes and these are identical both visits. And they match the codes seen on the first visit. So my guess is that JCL and JCR are the correct codes for both visits. Can Arjen/Kanarie confirm this theory?

Hi Wonju666

Sharply noticed, indeed a typo by me. Codes should be JCL and JCR are the correct ones. JCN belongs to 2044 which I have seen before, but not on Amiens and not during this trip.
