Hello everybody,
This summer I visit the greece island Rhodes!
What can I expect?
Can I expect some mil traffic?
Or some nice civil russians ?
And is photographing allowed at Greece?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sander,

If by any chance, you still have to go to Rhodos, I have a sort of "timetable for you. Let me know, send me a pm.

On another note: I thought the airport was called "Paradiso" (hence LGRP).

Well, as everything is called after the famous sports family Diagoras, the new airport carries that name also. Paradissio is the village next to the airport.

For the airport, we lay on the beach some days and there's at least a herc each day and there should be a CSAR Cougar on detachement. We saw a C-27 landing but as we were in take off it was from the runway before it was nicely photographable :) Also, within 5 minutes there was security asking if we took pictures and stating that 'some' flights are not to be photographed. Also they didn't like it when we should go to the arriving side of the field. but if something valuable is departing you can make nice pictures on this spot:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 5&t=h&z=18

Also there seems to be a range on the eastern side of the island, where you have this big bay. When coming from Rhodos town, you drive next to the coastline and just before the Unesco village of Lindos, you can park your car next to the road and watch the bay. I saw a herc dropping paras, a couple of F-16s doing strafing and bombruns (don't know if it was live) and a Chinook was whopping around too. on 2 days this was. The range should be in the area of the Massari village
Here was our viewing point to see the bay:

Anyhow, there's quite a lot of activity as there's no base but you can still see quite some aircraft passing by. There wasn't a day that i didn't see military aircraft. Also just between Turkey and Rhodos town you have a traveling route from Cyprus to the UK I guess, as in once we saw a 3 ship Seaking HC.4 passing by. and they flew direction from Cyprus inbound European mainland...

Rhodos (LGRP/RHO) - 2009

Post by js51672 »

Hi all,

i have been there and it gives some strange feelings over there.
But the locals are very friendly!

At Rhodos is one rwy 07-25
At rwy 25 near the threshold you can perfect make pictures
Ask at the Dry-cleaning service for PERMISSION to make picture behind the building, also in the shadow!
Friendly asking is the most friendly way!

At rwy 07 is a great place!
At the end of the public busline to Paradisi is small restaurant with the name AIRPORT VIEW
Ask to the owner Vicki ! She will help you for a great service that day.
Most times the planes are landing/ departing at rwy 25, but here you can drink and eat enough for a good stay!

The A300 of Amari flight is removed and scrapped after 10 years end of may2009 ! So it is not no more there!
Malolo LaiLai daarvoorbij gaan is dichterbij komen..

Hello all from a nice and warm Rhodos!
A lots of small aircraft here like 737's and A320's..
The only 747 i saw is one from Transaero which also flew with the 737 at Rhodos.
Almost every day there is a herc or a C27 or both only not in the weekend.
The IL-96 I saw from Rossiya is everytime 1 till 3 hours later then planned..
It comes every sunday to Rhodos.
Does anybody know the situation of photographing over there because my hostess say it isn't allowed to photograph at the airport.

The airline you will see the most is Aegan.
Sunday is the busiest day of the airport with some bigger planes like A330's the Il-96 and some others..

I'm now going to the beach!

Well, first of all, afaik photography near the airport is not forbidden. The hostess is probably protecting herself against any problem there might occur, but she does not know the exact situation. During my several visits (in june) to the beginning of the runway (25) I did not have any problem whatsoever. Only the Israeli security checks out the place every time an Israeli carrier arrives/departs. But to me they were very friendly. So, I personally would just go there and take photographs.

Good luck!

You're in luck if you need an identity for the Transall on 30 July, I was also on holiday in Rhodes and whilst driving towards Rhodes town I noticed the C160 in the overhead. When I reached the airport, the aircraft had landed and was shutting down on the ramp to the right of the terminal, it was French Air Force R154. Hope this helps.
