Arriving around midnight at the (low cost) terminal 2 at Kota Kinabalu resulted in the following. Technically it was already January 3rd, so here's what could be read off:
9M-AFJ / AFW / AHH A320-216 Air Asia
As all Air Asia flights (6 or 7 in total) seemed to have arrived at the same time it was rather chaotic in the baggage area. Outside the terminal there were only airport taxis to be found which would bring you anywhere for set prices (tickets sold from a booth in the terminal). Too bad I booked a hotel (Seapark Condotel) only 3 minutes driving from the terminal...
I found out the next day that it's a 5-10 minute walk from the 'hotel' to the threshold of runway 20 (however they hardly ever used it from the Northern side during my stay in the area).
That afternoon we went to Berenggis Resort which is 20km to the South. It is located directly under the flightpath of most aircraft coming in to land from the South on (the only) runway 02.
Traffic is mostly Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines (A330, B737 and B777) and MASWings (mostly F-50s and ATR's). The larger Malaysian aircraft make a stop at KK mainly on their way to Japan and Hong Kong. Every morning (except Sundays) 1 or 2 Transmile B727s will land shortly after each other to leave again in the evening. The cargo ramp is located next to Terminal 2. Terminal 1 seems to handle all non-Air Asia flights. Others are: Royal Brunei (A319/A320) every morning and late afternoon, Jetstar, Dragonair and Silk Air. It's not that busy, but it's nice. There was also a hotel next to the runway, which must have nice views as most aircraft rotate here. It's called the Airport View Hotel.
