Wrecks and relics in France

Post by Polleke_NL »

Like many others, I will be travelling to Hyeres and Istres in June, and I would like to also spot as many wrecks relics along the way if possible.
I do have the EMOOS but it does not have a map with the locations of all aircraft/remains so th eonly way to find out what is available along the route would be to key in all locations into Google Earth, which is a hell of a thing to do.
To easify things: does anyone have a graphical overview available of what wrecks and relics are available at what location in France so I can easily plan my route?
Already checked the Euro Demobbed site but unfortunattely France doesn't function there...

Hi,

I am planning my holidays in the Cote d'Azur in May, and found next W&R I will pass on my route from NL to the southern off France (so same for those to Hyeres in june).

Metz-Frescaty:
F-100D camo pres on pole at gate, easy from exit 30B (A31) to do, or even visible from the highway??

Dijon you might drive very close by and a bit more to the south the great museum Savigy-les Beaune.

In Lyon you can take exit 33 to Limonest and than to BA942 on the hill not that far from the highway A7. A Mirage F-1 is pres close behind the fence, and a S.Mystere and Mirage 3C should be there.

In Valence (A7) about 3 kms south of exit 15 you will see CM.175 18 east from the highway preserved. You can also take exit 15 to the airport Valence-Chabeuil with some W&R (see EMOOS).

Nimes offers some W&R.

Marseille for the Securite Civile and Eurocopter, the museum in Orange.

In the area off Hyeres is also Cuers (best to spot from the northern aeroclub), Le Luc.

As I stay in Le Muy I go also more east to check Cannes-Mandelieu and Frejus (MD.315) and Etendard 4M at the beach.

If anyone can add some more W&R in the area off Le Muy???

grtz,
Erik

Some additions:

Montelimar (airfield): Museum

Avignon (airfield): Caravelle (ex AF)

Visan (airfield, about 15km off the highway): Flamant

Uchaud: Noratlas wreck

Salon de Provence (airfield): Magister on roundabout

Aix-en-Provence (airfield): Noratlas

Vitrolles (school): Mirage (Noratlas is gone) + some others

Marseilles-St. Victoret: Museum with CL-215

Marseille-Marignane (town): Alouette II on roundabout

Two questions regarding Metz-Frescaty: Is it possibly to take pictures of the F-100 from outside? And wasn't there a Noratlas fuselage?

You could use an old fashion road map like the one from Michelin,
and note which Departement to you will pas enroute.
The number behind the location in EMOOS are the Departement numbers.
This will reduce the number of locations you can check on Google Earth.

Regards,

Otger

Note; In the EMOOS 2011 we are trying to list all GPS locations.
For the benefit of Mr. Kite, there will be a show tonight on trampoline

Hey Otger, that's great news, didn't know about the department numbers but that indeed might help??
And looking forward to the new edition (and so is my TomTom ;o) )

Hi,

Visible from outside the main gate at Salon is a Mystère IVA
http://www.airliners.net/photo/1361659/M/
At St. Victoret there's now also an Alouette III
http://www.airliners.net/photo/France-- ... 1354630/M/
Is the identity known of the Alouette II in Marignane? The roundabout is on the D9 road through town.

And at the gate of Cannes-Mandelieu is a Beech 18.

If anyone's passing through La Creux de la Thine on the N7, there should still be the fuselage of former Kelair HS-748 F-GHKL. Try Google-Maps/View...it's visible from outside: here

tip: do as i did:

go and buy Aviation museum and Collection of mainland Europe By famous Bob Ogden.
it s a brand New book, very nice and perhaps usefull for your trips. also with monuments / W&R
with maps

Not exactly the place for advertisements, but this book (at least the previous edition) only covers larger collections but not the individual aircrafts owned by private persons or companies, or gateguards, so it does not give me a complete picture on what to look for..., but thanks for the suggestion anyway.. (stiff price by the way.., UKP 28,-- !)

only covers larger collections but not the individual aircrafts owned by private persons or companies, or gateguards, so it does not give me a complete picture on what to look for.

short translation:
only covers larger collections but not the individual aircrafts owned by private persons or companies, or gateguards, so it does not give me a complete picture on what to look for.

(untrue, there are loads of individuele "monuments", gateguards etc. in this new 2nd edition, inclusding PPR-private owned stuff)

tip 2 (zuunig mode on) kijk even naar de members prijs. 23,50 pond. (zuunig mode off.):
